On craig list, I see alot of retired djs that are selling their hard drives with 100k songs. They say the songs were purchased and at high mp3 quality. Is this legal? Can you purchase the hard drive with the music? I just wanted to know becuase at $250 sounds like a bargain but I do not want to be involved in illegal music transfers. Thanks guys. I live in US by the way.

Thanks for the reply. So a DJ techniclly can never sell their music library or collection?

when it comes to digital formats it becomes very difficult to sell them!
Obviously you can sell physical discs or vinyl but with mp3 etc unless you are very methodical and keep your iTunes receipts or equivilant there is no way of proving that these files are legitimate and paid for.

Technically it is illegal to save the music into electronic format to begin with, and even more illegal to resell it....however, in reality selling the drive full of files is (in my opinion) no different than virtually all of the video and audio download pools selling "subscriptions" as most of them are illegal also.
For some reason the powers that be just never get around to shutting down the pools like 8thwonder, smashvidz, exclusiveDj, and the other ones out there (they all may be legit too, but as a consumer I have know way to know as they won't show me the signed agreements witht the labels). I think the labels know about them, but have finally realized that the promotional value of getting their music and videos out there and played by Djs far outweighs the expense, hassle and the bad publicity of going after all of them.
I am sure at some point we have all (yes even you who say NEVER) have illegally aquired songs or videos along the way, even if it was as harmless as copying files from your one time DJ roommate. I used to be a VERY strong opponent about piracy; however, since the labels themselves don't seem to care and with their stupid DRM making my life as a legit consumer so difficult for so many years I don't care anymore and I am certainly not going to be their unpaid policeman. I have purchased some of my video collection (stuff that is no longer available through legit channels) from someone on craigslist and the quality was excellent and his service was great and he had a lot of stuff I could not find ANYWHERE else............am I proud of it, no...but I could not get it any other way.
........but BUYER beware, there are a LOT of scams out there and if you do go that route you should be very careful and only use someone you were recommended to by other Djs or you could easily be burned (in more ways that one). Keep in mind there is a difference between a good bargain (legal or illegal) and a deal that is TOO good to be true...you will usually lose on those.
When all is said and done let you conscience and your common sense be your guide.

well said above, thank you guys for the advice, too good to be true, it usually is. I just wanted to know if this is something that you would get in dip sheet for doing. kinda of blowing out of porpotions but, drugs are illegal, you as the buyer are guilty as well. So wanted to know if this is the same situation.

very true on what you said but being in a LEGAL RECORD POOL (Latinos Unidos Record Pool/ www.LatinosUnidosOnline.com) i can tell you that labels now will no longer be promoting their music in cds no longer, they are officially starting this week promoting in digital format that is how we are starting to get our music but in no way that means All music received from Licensor is assigned to the above named Licensee and cannot in ANY way be sold, rented, duplicated, broadcast, or removed for play at any restricted location. Licensor reserves the right to require Licensee to cease and desist playing any audio clip upon written notice. If Licensee violates any portion of this Agreement, Licensee’s rights immediately terminate and all music must be returned to Label or owner upon demand. Any resale, distribution in any manner, public display, and duplication in part or as a whole, including but not limited to all forms of digital encoding or duplication onto ANY format, is expressly prohibited. Violation of any applicable laws, including federal copyright laws or any other misuse of this promotional product, is strictly prohibited. Subscribers violating any portion of these conditions will be subject to immediate cancellation of subscription with no refund, and the Licensee will be held responsible for any legal actions resulting from this misuse including but not limited to criminal prosecution. All respective copyrights are retained by the artists, producers, and/or participating record labels and all applicable laws pertaining to original copyright owners continue to apply.

This has always been true since the begining of recording, the problem is if I find a digital pool on the net how am I as a consumer supposed to know if it is legit or not? I certainly don't have the time or the contacts to call all the labels to see if they have grated licensing rights to each and every pool. It is not my job to be the net music police.
If I can find these "pools" with my limited knowlege and resources then so must the labels be able to and it is THEIR job to go after them and shut them down, not mine.
