Killabee44: “[I have] a couple of issues with Acid5. First of all it won't detect my sound card properly…. Another is that I cant find a way to record two tracks simultaneously.”

You definitely have to find a solution to those two issues if you plan on recording a live mix with Acid 5. My $9.99 Audio Studio SE software detected both my sound cards with no problems. It also gave me the ability to assign one sound card for playback and the other for recording. And you are having a sound card issue with a well known and very professional program like Acid 5—go figure…. Even if you solve the sound card issue, you still will not be able to record a live mix and be able to edit or redo your mistakes without using two tracks (you need one track for each VDJ desk). Your only hope is for Andre or some other knowledgeable Acid 5 user to explain to you a different way—that doesn't require you to “use the pencil to draw the part of the song you want in each track.” I know mixing is an “Art,” but drawing songs into tracks…(just joking with you Andre).

b.t.w. Andre, you forgot about Acid's "Paint Tool"

Killabee44, after reading some of your post again, I realize that you have referred to two different Acid products—“I just bought Sony Acid Pro 5” (last post on page 2), and “Im leaning to staying with Acid Music Studio 5…” (first post on page 4). Consequently, which one do you have? Since I think you have Acid Pro 5, I’m going to download the demo for it and see if I can record a live mix into two tracks simultaneously. While I’m conducting this experiment, you may want to consider posting your issues in this Acid forum:

Killabee44, I downloaded the manual for Acid Pro 5 instead of the demo. After researching the manual, I unfortunately found out that you can’t use this software as a multi-track recorder. It states on page 169 of the manual, “ACID software is a loop-based audio-production tool. It is not designed for multi-track recording projects”.

"Fruit Loops" have any of you heard of this soft ware. I want to know more about it

I had an earlier version of it that someone gave me. I never used it because I have Vegas Audio and Acid 3.0. It states on the website for Fruity Loops that you can record directly into the tracks. However, you need to make sure that you can record into two tracks simultaneously if you want to record a live mix. You must also be able to record one track in the left channel only and the other track in the right channel only. If you want to edit your mistakes, the simplest way is to be able to playback your mix and redo your mistakes in another track. My software (Vegas Audio) allows me the option to do multiple takes (recordings) into the same tracks that I originally recorded in. I then select which take I want to use. However, it’s much simpler to just add another track to do your corrections. Go here to find out more info; there’s also a demo that you can download: http://www.fruityloops.com/

b.t.w. You need to seriously consider buying the VDJ Professional Edition!

Andre: “Double 0 you win and proved your point very well.......hands down”

Andre, this was never about winning by proving a “point”. It was about “pointing” Killabee44 (and anybody else interested) into the right direction so he wouldn’t loose. Instead of him going into the direction that I tried so desperately to point him in—multi-track recording software, he decided to follow your lead—Acid 5; unfortunately, he lost. Therefore, I hope your “digging” will uncover a way for Killabee44 to use Acid 5 as a multi-track recorder.

Well,

I purchased Acid5 at a retailer in which one of my friends is a manager and he told me that I would be able to take it back. Not their regular policy, but since I cant use it he'll let me do it this once. Ill be returning it in the next couple of days.

You are very fortunate Killabee44! In the future, see if a product that you are interested in has a demo for you to try. Also consider calling or e-mailing the company and explaining what you want to use the software for. They can give you all the facts. Furthermore, consider writing down all the features I’ve mentioned in this thread and verify that a particular product has them.

Since I didn’t get the chance to go by the Guitar Center like I had informed you of earlier in this thread, I’ll try to swing by there tomorrow and see if I can find multi-track recording software with features that you need. Plus, they are probably having a special holiday $ell. Therefore, let me know what your price range is if you can. It would be a waste of time to look at software that is too expensive or inexpensive. You might also want to wait until I check on some multi-track recording software before you buy something else. Just because it states “multi-track recording” on the box doesn’t mean it will record the way you need it to. Example: If you read my last post on page 4, the very inexpensive multi-track recording software that I experimented with will not allow me to record into two tracks simultaneously.

b.t.w. Andre, you can stop your “digging”.

Killabee44, since Sony offers Acid Pro 5 for approximately $300, I’ll look at software in this price range. I assume your friend is going to give you store credit. However, if you get your money back, you should consider something less expensive since this is experimental for you.

theres also a great CD Mastering program called Sonic Foundry Cd Architect 5.0 and is great for mastering your mixes and creating top quality CD's (it also burns them too).

CD Architect cannot record anything. It only lets you edit, burn, master, and chop up your mixes. It uses Soundforge to record. Cakewalk will be my next one to check out.

Killabee44, I went to the Guitar Center today to look at multi-track recording software (and some DJ DVDs). I was fortunate to meet a salesperson who is familiar with SONAR 4 Studio Edition. He also uses Cubase and Ableton Live 4 to make background music for a radio program. When I explained to him in detail what the multi-track software would be used for, he recommended Ableton Live 4 as the best choice. I looked at the box for Ableton Live 4, and I didn’t notice a record button for each track. However, the salesperson reassured me that you can record into multiple tracks simultaneously. He also stated that the reason Ableton Live 4 would be better for recording a multi-track mix is because it has a feature that will assist in synchronizing one audio track with another audio track. He attempted to explain the audio track synchronization procedure to me but I didn’t understand it. He further informed me that it works very well with loops. He said his second choice would be the SONAR 4 Studio Edition (I told him my price range was around $300). Surprisingly, he said Cubase SX would be his third choice. Therefore, see if you can find demos for each software. Here’s one for SONAR 4 Studio Edition:

Make sure you do your homework this time!

b.t.w. I bought the Jam Master Jay “Be a DJ” DVD for sentimental reasons—may he rest in peace….
