Like is said, to each his own. I don't understand why Charlie and Phantom have to talk down to others that see this as a useful tool.
If you don't like it, don't use it. Your attitudes show how closed minded and insecure you guys are in your craft. I'm not a full time DJ, I do it for fun. And it's fun to interact with people at parties. If you guys don't want to kick it with the crowd, stay in the booth. No one has had anything to say negative about the way you gents prefer to run your shows.

I don't talk down to anyone... I'm expressing my opinion since the FIRST POST of the thread is a QUESTION. If it was "Look how cool it is to remote control your booth with a WinMo phone" then I wouldn't express my opinion the same way. I would still had the same beliefs, but a different way to express them.
Finally, in a previous post I said that everyone can do with his show the way he wants to... :)

Few years ago I was about to work in a beach(bitch bar...owner was a lady)who asked me,that when customers get in and right after the waiter-barman gets their order,I should have to do so with music requests...and put them at once in my playlist so to be played in the next minutes....as a pro dj for 17 years at the time,Ifelt very bad and downgraded and of course since this was the case Ijust walked away and told her to find another clown for the job.....thats the case with the remote gagdgets and gettin mixed with the crowd wont make you better dj or make you have fun...in many cases if you are a person that likes to comunicate with the crowd..people can tell so by your music choices and the way you act as a dj and as a person...If you are not able to read your crowd no gagdget will do the job for you...Come on guys RESPECT yourself and your profession..sorry for being aggresive and anyway pcs and software have made our jobs easier at least use your minds to get into other people heads..It is so much bettr fun to do it yourself..thnx for reading

Yep you got it, it's about reaching the crowd from the booth without having to go round asking each and everyone of them what they would like played.
Bar staff filling in for the DJ do that.

i disagree w/ Charlie and Fender ......
never hurts to mix it up with the crowd unless ......you don't connect with them
i mean face to face and with the music .....
as always lame requests shouldn't be played
as far as the owner situation .....you gotta know these people are not smart about music
and in my experience cheap and ignorant ......
i woulda done what she asked ....until she and/or her friend or favorite customer left , then back to reality
and the good music .....
i empathize but i think you ought to try a strip club or 2 if you wanna see some real
irritating people and situations to finesse
most strip clubs are kinda twilight zone .......

You know your a good DJ when everyone's danced all night and you've hardly taken any requests, if any at all.
There are different DJ's out there and different way's of doing it but by now you should know how to do the business, I know there are DJ's out there that just do requests all night, you can have anything you want in any order! These DJ's don't actually every play a set or know how to.
They don't work on there music, categorising it or try to play it with any kind of flow/technique. You can book these guy's where I come from for £100 yet I still get booked for 500 so I must be doing something right.
Anyway, I appreciate that some like to play as many requests as possible sooner than work on the music in advance. Like a lot of the discussions, sometimes you have to be diplomatic and simply say - each to his own, and leave it at that.
PS, when I used to open up, I used to say - if you have any requests, come and chat to me, and if I've got it, I'll play it!! What happened? Everybody wanted a request playing. In the end I was a free jukebox with 0 respects on £100 a night.
The audience should be eating out of the palm of your hand, you should have complete control and alway's leave them wanting more.
Anyway, there's so much involved in being a good DJ, I'll let you figure it out.

I hate to say it. But I don't see anything wrong with it.
Everyone here could still use two turntables and a microphone (or CD decks).
You're only using Virtual DJ to make life EASIER.
I posed this question in a topic before about the uses of VDJ, and everyone came up with resons why it SHOULD be used. I was explaining how Most of the house music DJ's and clubs in Northern NJ and NYC and Chicago do NOT use an emulator program (or at least the ones I have traveled around to see), and there were quite adequate counters to my statement.
Because for a while I was feelig like this is a gadgetry, something for 'trick' DJ's, who can't do without visual 'waveriding'
but yeah, same thing applies. if you can see yourself making life easy by using vdj in your settings, I don't see why you can't make life easier getting involved on the floor.
And for those who came up with outlandish scenarios as to why this shouldn't be done. It's no different than saying:
"You're in the middle of the set, and the Asio Soundcard starts acting funny. You don't have one CD or vinyl with you, and now you're stuck. What do you do?"

All tools can be usefull at a given moment when it being used with Virtual Dj or similar application.one might need remote control while multi-tracking in a recording section (this scenario is soon to be a Reality..) and your handling various mixers and controllers.but in a club or gig situation i have to agree with terry and phantom, the Dj belongs behind his decks,in the booth, working, performing.

When you are very good on the 1's & 2's, you dont need to be taking rquest. Hardly anyone would ask you for a song. Its all natural for people full up the dance floor because they like the music you play. What separates many djs from another even though we all play the same type of genres is.. Every dj has his own style. Many Dj's dont have energy in their mixes and dont know how to follow up. The good djs bring energy into the mixes and knows ho to follow up. Just because you have the dance floor packed doesnt mean you keep playing the same tyype of music. You keep it fresh and raise the bar to a higher level.

Yes and no.
I know at least with house music, that when you play good music, sometimes its not enough if the crowd isn't feeling it totally.
I remember that myself when I was in college. I'm in the back with the house DJ at a club in Vermont. He puts on a song that's hot fire, but it cleared the floor. At that point I recognized that sometimes you have to stash artistic license for what makes the crowd go.
Remember "Gladiator, the MOB is Rome. Win the crowd, and you win your freedom"
I listen to an internet radio station, and the DJ's play a LOT differently in a Club or in an outdoor concert as opposed to their show (Not to mention I've yet to see a DJ using this program. from NJ to NY, they all decide to use CD decks. the good ones that is...)
So playing good music is wonderful, but knowing your crowd allows you to do that as well. You can play great country music all you want, just not in a house music club....

I suppose it could be good if you travel, e.g. abroad and it's a completly different vibe altogether, and you have no idea what to play.
I would still prefur them to come and ask me.
