Following the sound setup instructions from American Audio the gain changes within VDJ.
Is there a way to have the gain on the VMS2 not change the gains within VDJ?

please check the mapping of the VMS ....if there is a action for the gains, just delet it. You don`t need this action because the VMS has an analog mixer. This will work only in the PreEQ Mode ( means: the sound is mixed in the controller and not in VDJ)...

If you're talking about the faders, this will be VOLUME, just map the action to read: Nothing

to auto+remember, as it was.

Well it's the same logic, just use auto learn to find the command you want then map it to nothing.

Some Users prefer that the volume faders move at the skin, having no cause to the volume in VDJ. You can map a so called "fake" command like "fake_level deck 1"

Just keep in mind, that the VMS2 has an analoge Mixersection. So you have to deactivate the Crossfader in VDJ. Volumefader and EQ`s can have a "fake" command if you want the sliders and nobs moving in the skin. Master/ Booth out, Balance and the Gains should not be mapped at all, to avoid soundproblems.

Quite by accident I found that if I use set_gain 0 is works.
I tried the way suggested; that is just delete the action. Appears to work
in the same manner; is one better than the other?
What is reason to deactivate cross fader in VDJ? RIght it is set to
full and seems to be fine.

If you have the the Cf in the software aktive an use also the analog one from the controller in can take bad influence to the general use. Not always, but sometimes. Thats what at least a lot of user reports...I have deleted the actions for gain, master and booth ( infact i have never had one really ) A couple of months ago i changed the VMS to Post EQ Mode so i had to define the actions and saved it in a seperate mapping. In the PreEq Mode you don`t need them cause the analoge mixer is responsible for the sound...

Is there a way to have the sample act like the effects?
IE: let's say shift_down for deck 1 to activate samples and nav knob to scroll
through and push nav knob to activate a sample.

As far as i know, there is no way to scroll through the sample bank. You can only map certain sampels on some free or unused buttons to activate. Another way is to use a button for loading 12 new samples into the sample bank and use them in the common way by using the mouse and the skin in "browser samples". Scrolling the samples the way you would like, should work in V8.

I changed faders etc accordingly to your info.
Problems I was having seems to have disappeared.
I talked to American Last week and sent 2 e-mails, because
the unit would not always connect. Also sometimes when loading
tunes they would load & play at the same time , really FAST.
Only right side would work;
But like I said, after setting things like you suggested, all seems to be good.
Surer am glad for this community as American Audio really does not give much help.
