Do i remember reading somewhere that VDJ8 needs an internet connection to continue to function fully unless some other plugin is applied , reason i ask is my two performance laptops never see the internet and updates to VDJ7 are always applied by me manually , i'm about to switch to 8 but seem to recall this could be a problem if i don't go online

You read incorrectly :)
8 needs to go online once, to activate. Even that can be done offline via support if necessary. An internet connection is not required to use the software.
Only Pro Subscriber users need regular internet access - and even that is only once a month or so in order to revalidate their ongoing license.
