As diligent as I try to be my external hard drive gets corrupted (from transferring from desktop to laptop, vice versa) and when I fix the errors I lose my tags, first seen, last played, etc, and it seems it has to reanalyze the entire library. Are this particular file(s) stored on the database xml file? I want to back my tags up before this happens again and save myself from misery and have the ability to restore it if my external HD gets corrupted again. Thanks for the help in advance as this is very frustrating for me.

Yes, the database.xml file stores all that data.
You can also use VirtualDJ to backup your databases.
