Topic: video files on external harddrive
Hello everyone,

I wanted to know if I use video files on an external harddrive: are the lists which contain the videofiles on the external drive or is it saved internally?
the reason for the question is because if I want to use my Mac at home can I use the external harddrive "plug and play" like I was able in Serato ?

Thanks in advance

There is no difference between audio and video files. If the list has hotplug enabled, then all files on the external will be stored with that list on the external itself. If the list has files from the external and your OS main drive, it will be split amongst both drives, and VirtualDJ will sort out the final appearance based on what's connected.

thanks a lot, what does hotplug mean?

Read up on list folders in the VirtualDJ User Manual here.

"hotplug" means that the List in question will reflect all connected drives containing songs that were put into the list at any given time (i.e. drives can be connected/disconnected at any time before/after startup and list folders will be updated accordingly).

The list themselves are also distributed with the drive (alongside the database.xml within the VirtualDJ folder), where the existence of the list on that drive depends on whether there are tracks from that drive in the list (and VirtualDJ takes care of merging them into what you see in the browser).

So instead of seeing a list with missing tracks due to the drive(s) containing those tracks being disconnected (as it was before => hotplug implicitly disabled as it didn't exist), now you'll only see available track entries (reflecting what drives are actually connected) or you may not even see the list at all (all tracks in the list folder are contained in external drives which are not connected).

The hotplug feature was introduced with VirtualDJ 2024 (b8000 and later). The behaviour can be disabled per list (giving the previous behaviour described and all lists stored on the main OS drive that runs VirtualDJ) through the right-click context menu, or globally for new lists by setting the option disableHotplugForNewLists to true. Also I think that if a list folder was migrated from an older VirtualDJ release, hotplug may be disabled for it (that one I'm not sure of/devs can confirm).

Hotplug was the normal way Virtual Folders worked since at least VirtualDJ 7.
Since these are simply called Lists since VirtualDJ 2024 there is indeed an option to enable or disable this, so that you can choose between the behavior of Playlists (which were always stored on the main drive) and Virtual Folders (which always had hotplug)

@Adion thank you for the clarifications/corrections, as a relative newcomer to VirtualDJ I didn't know those details 🙏.

Thanks @adion and @djvinyltouch

That helped a lot.

I used to use serato since 2009 but had to switch to Rekordbox. But that software is a huge bug itself for me so I wanted an alternative. And I really struggeled with myself to buy VDJ because of the "image".
But it is such a great software and I'm really happy that I bought it.

Thanks to the whole VDJ team!

I know what you mean by Rekordbox...besides springing the subscription-only model in version 6, there were some limitations that I had difficulty understanding why they should exist (e.g. audio and video files couldn't be in the same playlist, you could only have a max of 128 tags, sluggish startup/runtime time to name a few), and I had a a pretty bad experience with trying to ask for clarification/report bugs. Paying a subscription with that kind of support wasn't something I was ready to settle for.
VirtualDJ (the platform and community) has been much more pleasant to use/experience, but that's just my opinion 🍺.
