Topic: Karaoke duets
Hi, I have a quick request. Among other things, I use the STEMS separation feature for karaoke. Everything works great; while I occasionally have to make minor manual adjustments to the lyrics, that’s a negligible issue. However, I’ve run into a problem with a specific scenario: songs featuring two vocalists—duets. It seems VirtualDJ can’t distinguish between individual voices (even in male-female duets) and displays the lyrics chronologically by default, without differentiating between the singers.

Do you know if there’s a way to distinguish the voices—either automatically or manually? For instance, by using different colors, font sizes, or something similar?

I'm thinking it's not that sophisticated. Karaoke manufacturers recreate all tracks from scratch, so it's easy to separate/differentiate the vocals and swipes.

Hi DJDONN, I’m not sure if you fully understood my question...

Here’s a scenario: I have the song "All For Love" by Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart & Sting.

Each of the three singers performs their own part. I load the track into the deck and use the "Instrumental" button in the STEMS tool. In "Master video effects," I select and activate KARAOKE. Then I start the song.

Now, only the music plays (without vocals), and in the video window, I see the lyrics highlighting in sync with the actual audio. However, I can't tell which parts are sung by Adams, Stewart, or Sting; the lyrics appear uniform for all three singers. Karaoke singers can't tell when they are supposed to sing their specific parts.

Could you please advise me on this?

There is nothing to advise - what you are asking for is outside of the current scope.

The lyrics is currently based on the vocal stem, and that only separates vocals, not the vocals into constituent vocals or who is singing what part.

Besides, if the persons know the song, then most duets sang in unison have the people involved singing the same thing, but harmonizing (the single set of lyrics should be the same for both people in the majority case). If it's not in unison, then it's one at a time/obvious from the lyrics, and they should know who sings what.

If you really need karaoke for a duet with who is supposed to sing what marked in the video display, then get the official karaoke file with the text rendered.

Thanks for the advice and for confirming that there is still room for improvement in VirtualDJ in this regard. Its karaoke features are already great, and with this enhancement, it would be even more amazing.
It feels like the goal is so close, especially since it already has a Lyrics Editor...

And yes, you're right—people usually pick songs they know. But you’d be surprised how, under the pressure of being the "star of the evening," they forget the lyrics, the vocal cues, and—of course—which singer takes the lead and who follows. That’s been my experience.

VirtualDJ forever!
