Topic: Just about to do my first gig - bu need some help with connections

Questo argomento è obsoleto e potrebbe contenere informazioni obsolete o errate.

Hey guys

Just wanted to say how useful these forums have been over the last few days-it is so nice to see loads of helpful people, and no idiots waiting to flame the noobs.

Okay, back to the topic, I am about to do my first gig, and have just been to the club where it will be held. Like a fool I spent my time socialising and drinking - and forgot to check out the mixing desk.

From what I saw the DJ was using two turntables and a small mixer inbetween. I didnt get any model numbers or names.. . . .

What I want to know is what should I take with me when I go to perform. I have an adaptor to allow me to hook up the laptop to one of the turntable inputs ( 3.5mm jack to 2 x phono plugs ) .

But, I have been told by some people that I should plug the laptop into the line in socket on the mixer, is that true ? What if the mixer doesnt have a line in socket ?

Also some people have told me that a laptop wont work on ordinary mixers as the output is not high enough volts , they said that turntables give out more voltage on the signal and a laptop would sound very quiet/distorted - is this true ?

So what should I do ? Are there any other cables that you recommend I buy ? Any adaptors ? What should I be looking to plug my laptop into on the night ?

Thanks for all your help

you need to plug the laptop into the "line" inputs of the mixer, all mixers have atleast one line input. you need a 3.5mm to 2 RCA plugs to connect from the laptop to the mixer.

DO NOT plug the plugs into the Phono plugs you can blow circuits by doing this.

As for the laptop not having enough volts (gain) that is what the gain control on the mixer is for, although i've never had any problems with not having enough gain. if the volume is too low turn up the gain knob until the level is suitable.

hope that helps. good luck

ok, i get that . Next problem is that I am doing a 2 hour set at midnight . So. . . . how does the DJ handover to me, without it sounding like a break in the music .

Do mixers allow him to smoothly fade over to the line input on his mixer . . . i.e. from one of his turntables - to me on the laptop .

?

Thanks loads for all your help guys

Hi,
Most likely the mixer has a switch for selecting phono input or line input on the fader. Be there in time so you can check it out....and good luck with your gig,
