Topic: Buying A New Internal Hard Drive - Page: 1

Questa parte dell'argomento è obsoleta e potrebbe contenere informazioni obsolete o errate

I need to add more hard drive space to my desktop but I don't know what to look for exactly. It will have to have a lot of space since I plan on ripping my DVD's (about 45 right now) as vob files instead of mpeg1.

What should I be looking for in terms of speed and where should I buy from? I'm looking at internal drives.

Chirs,

good to see you coming around.

First off we need to know what motherboard you have, because I would highly suggest sata drives faster better etc...

so if it were me I'd look from some maxtor sata150 at 300-400 gigs or go for the gold buy a sata2 card and use sata2 which is faster yet but a side effect its more expensive.

Looks like you'll need about 385 gig's but remeber subtact the ambiants and intro so it averages about 6 or so gig's per dvd.

Thanks Cyder.

Wouldn't be into video without VDJ. Thanks for the tip. My specs are in my blog but here goes anyway.

Intel Pentium 4 Processor 630 (3.0GHz, 800MHz, 2MB L2) 1
Intel 915G Motherboard w/Integrated Marvell Gigabit 1
2048MB 533MHz Dual-channel DDR2 SDRAM (4-512MB modules) 1
FPD1760 17" Silver LCD Flat Panel Display (17" Viewable) 1
nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra w/256MB DDR3 Dual DVI & TV-Out 1
120GB 7200*** Serial ATA hard drive w/ 8MB cache 1
16x Double-Layer Multi-Format DVD Writer DVD¦/R¦RW/CD-R/RW 1

Also, any suggestions on where to purchase the drives?

Thats quite a system you have there very impressive. Looks like your motherboard has sata built right in so a sata150 drive (or 2) would be your best bet.

The place everyone goes to get computer parts is here

www.newegg.com

best prices and fast shipping.

This is were you need to plug in the drive. According to your spec's there should be 3 left open.

I'm glad Cyder is happy with my purchase! This machine is a lot better than my laptops. My only problem right now is transportation. I can't make a case for this machine until I get my new vehicle early next year. I'm going to have to carry the machine in piece by piece until then. It's onlyused for video shows and I use my laptops for regular DJ gigs.

So is this drive still a viable option? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822147007

If so, do I still need the card? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16816102064

The reason I skimmped on the hard drive was because I planned on doing MPEG1 which would only be about 40 gigs with my current collection.

Thanks for the help so far guys!

Well that is up to you. That drive is pretty expensive you might be better off buying 2 300's and sticking with the sata header on your motherboard. To answer your question yes to take advantage of sata2 yes you would need the sata2 adapter card. However the difference between the two can only be seen on paper, as the mechanical part of the hard drive continues to slow things down. You should be able to use that drive in 150 mode no problem. You'll need a sata2 cable though.

So if I get two smaller drives would I be able to install them without removing the existing drive? Is that what you meant when you said "you should 3 left open?" Do they new drives come with the cables I need?

The only times I did any work inside a computer was to add an ethernet card to my girlfriends desktop and then I switched out a cd drive from my internet radio station computer and input a CDRW drive.

Newegg.com doesn't even have that drive in stock. Can you point me in another direction of what to buy including any other cables or cards I may need. I know nothing about this stuff so direct links would rock!

I recomend SATA even SATA 150 than UATA.

Your motherboard came with 4 SATA 150 connections. You could use 4 HD of 250GB for $123 each and go for 1TB. Or you could use 2 400GB at $263GB each.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148065

If you get the Promise SATA II Card, then you could get 2 SATA II HD like this WD 250GB for $125. or use it in SATA 150 if you wish.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144701

The cables for ea. SATA HD $2.49
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812104659

You may need this cables to plug your HD. It's a SATA Power Adapter (one for each sata HD): $2.99 ea.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812105409

And if you go out of standard power plugs then a Y splitter: $5 ea.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812101203

If you like to make a big change and to go for more performace, replace your motherboard with a D955 like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813121286
You get Sata II capabilities (SATA 300) and Matrix RAID to get best performance and security so you could change any hard drive whitout losting the information in it and get much performance than a single HD.

Great PC you get my friend!

a side note did you get a manual with your motherboard that shows you how to set up a raid 0 2 of these in raid 0 striped would give awesome performance.
