ASIO drivers (if supported by your sound card) are a way for faster communication with the hardware, meaning response (time between you make an action and when the sound comes out) can be reduced to less than 2 milliseconds.
Without them, this can take more than 100 ms which is disturbing especially with timecode use (where delay is even longer because of input decoding)
