Hi,
I am thinking of getting Virual DJ but have a few quesitons that current users can help me with.
I have two technics SL1210s and was going to buy Final Scratch by Stanton so I could use timecoded records to play mp3's. However, After seeing this im not so sure.
I get the impression ( after reading alot o threads) all I need is
my decks ( technics 1210 )
My mixer ( pioneer - no midi control)
My PC ( 1 gig DDR, P4 3.2 gig, 300 gig HD)
Sound card , i currently have a SB Live with the breakout box, pretty sure it has two stereo inputs (line in 1 and 2) but not sure on two stereo outputs. any know if this is the case ? will it be any good ?
anyway, will this set up make me think i am actually playing the mp3;s on my decks ? ZERO latency ? is it really that good ? I havent even got a demo version yet as im not sure it will work with the sound card. Will it also wok with a normal mixer ( fading left to right etc)
Is it better than the FINAL SCRATCH Package ?
hope to hear form you soon !
cheers

i didn't try final scratch (ok i did, but didn't compare to VDJ). If you have these TTs and pioneer mixer, buy maya44 usb sound card and you will have very very good setup. Zero latency? almost ;) You will be able to use TC vinyls like real vinyls.
Trial version support one TC vinyl, so you can try and see.
If you have 2 line out at sound card you can connect to mixer of course :)

Hi Darren,
I think your choice is probably between Serato and VDJ. I say that after trying Traktor and reading the Traktor forums who are all very critical of Traktor 3 and finalscratch.
Serato is argued to be very reliable, but in the UK, the cheapest I have seen it, even on Ebay is around £420.
If you wanted to get moving with VDJ you would need to buy the professional edition which will come in at around £100ish with VAT.
I would really recommend buying a Maya 44 soundcard because they're recommended with VDJ and sound good. I got mine brand new from Ebay for £75. A couple of vinyls would probably take you to around £200 to £220 top whack for the lot.
The great thing is that VDJ is so versatile and constantly gets upgraded. You can use different skins.
So you can take your choice Pay double for Serato or get VDJ which works great and offers a lot more. Plus which in a few weeks you will get a free upgrade to VDJ4.
I would recommend VDJ - it's never let me down and it offers such a lot extra in terms of fx, user plugins, skins, not to mention video if you want to experiment with that.

my lap top aint the best p3 500ish with 256 ram ? will this run it for perfomances out etc ?
also, is it just like mixing vinyl, will i be able to nitice any real differences ? for instance, if my friend ( who is also a DJ) wants to do a set, will he be able to do it straight away ?
cheers

I have a friend who is 30 years DJ and always on vinyls. I showed him TC vinyls and he played on them for 3 hours. He said that there is no difference!
The only problem it was that he wanted to take vinyl down of the TT everytime when he stop playing the song :)))))))))))))
I am not sure about your laptop.. I would buy something better for use it with TC.

I agree with phillydj - But that pc spec is different to what you originally said, or didn't I read it right?
I find no probs though with a Celeron M 1400 and 1024Mb Ram. But I would probably upgrade my laptop if didn't have CD backup. Still,VDJ always runs reliably with my cheap and cheerful Dell 2200 laptop.

Did we say you can mix video just like audio? Can the others do that? Xeon, nice setup.

Vinyl timecode is not VDJs strongest point right now. It works, but it's not top of the class. If you want to use timecode to use mp3 tracks as if you were using vinyl I would go with Serato.
The expensive bit with serato is the audio interface which is way, no I mean _WAY_ better then MAYA44 or most others actually. The only interface close is teh RME HDSP RPM, but that is abot as expensive.
It's a case of you get what you pay for,,

ok lets cut the bull shit right here and now. i have used final 1.5 . seretto, i have used ots juke box , i have set up pcdj and still get email about there crap club. Dont go get a maya 44 unless you are using a lap top. the better deal is the m-audio 66 or the 44. for desk top. Time code is great but being able to do extra video and kareoke and have the power to rip, bpm and everything else is wicked. I would say this is the best i have used so far. strip club uses some pcdj junk, i showed them this and they bought it. due to the slide feature and all the video disks i bought in las vegas. dont let the forms mis lead you. this program is wicked if your computer is set up to hold such a program. i have crashed this program a couple of time but was trying to do something silly at the time. in regular use never had a problem. so its only 149$ that is about 1/4 a nights work well worth the cash.

cheers guys !
well, by a remarkable stroke of luck i have just obtained a P1.4M with 512 DDR laptop ( dell ). so im sure that will run it fine. could really do with a demo on the decks - any shops near birmingham do this software with the decks set up ? (bham UK that is).
didnt want to spend more than 300 on a set up really. so VDJ is looking good.
i even dreamt about it last night, VDJ and final scratch were having a fight, cant remember who won though ! doh !

I've used Final scratch way back when it was 1.0 and back then it was mentioned by Stanton that their software was flawless. However I returned it the next day due to the fact that the software would crash, had high latency, etc. VDJ so far is pretty good. If your not looking to spend too much cash I'd recommend getting a u46dj soundcard which is the replacement for the Maya 44 USB and if your like me and have a flight case or a roadcase and want everything connected inside for easy traveling and setup its great to leave under 1 of the TTs and just have a USB connector directly on the flightcase ;). I'll try to get some pics when I get a chance to show how I have mine setup.
