Ok, so it's looking like my pay off this month is going to be much bigger than expected, so I'mm looking into getting a notebook pc as well as the esi soundcard and new turntable. I was looking and noticed the fastest processor speed on notebooks within my budget run about 2.0 ghz (pentium mobile) and that all the duo cores seem a bit slower at 1.66 ghz. Would the duo core still be more efficiant for VDJ? What would be the slowest speed recommended for VDJ? Would a pentium m. 1.73 ghz. be enough? I'm running a sony vaio desktop right now for VDJ at 3.2 ghz (P4) with HT, so I know it'll be a step down, but I'm really looking forawrd to a more mobile setup. Thanks in advance;^]

why not go with something with an amd cpu? they tend to usually cost less anyway i think the manual says p4 1.2 is the recomended but from what i have seen i think it's more like 1.7 centrino 1.73 should be fine but make sure it has a nice video card if you plan on doing video's, but as i said before i would look for something with an amd

I can recomend the Dell Inspiron that has Intel Pentium M Core Duo 1.4 that's what I have and it is fast !!!!!!!!...............but I started with Toshiba Tecra PIII 1.2 Ghz. with 768 MB Ram and never crashed ( with music, not videos ). I played with it in more than one ocation for more than 10 hours straight and didn't have a glitch whatsoever.
In my opinion you can have a not to big Processor, but what you really need is a lot of Ram memory, at least 768 Mb ( 1.0 Gb recomended ).
With the processor that you have I would say you have enough ( for Music, and probably for videos also ) just upgrade to more Ram Memory.
But if you really want to buy a New Laptop...I would recomend Dell Inspiron. or if you wanna spend more the Toshiba Quosmio or Dell XPS.
Peace !!!

I was looking at either a dell or a sony (have to check if sony has amd). But yeah, dell is offering free 1gb RAM upgrades right now. I was looking at a dell ( http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=D80607T&s=dhs ), if I got this model I might be able to still afford the esi u46dj plus two stanton str8-150 turntables. It doesn't have the duo core, but it does come with a gb of ram. Does this look reliable enough for vdj with tcv? Sorry, I'm not up to speed much on all things computer related..lol. It looks good enough to me, but I'd like some other opinions in case I'm missing something;^]

Not a big fan of AMD stuff personally, they have a tendency to run hotter than their Intel equivalents, which is the last thing you want if you're using a laptop. Even with a Centrino based machine, it's still a good idea to sit the laptop on one of those cooler base things - basically a heatsink with a fan or two built in.
As for speed, mine's nothing special - I have a Toshiba laptop that clocks in at 1.76Ghz, with 512MB of memory and 128MB graphics, and it runs VDJ fine, although this is audio only. If I'm using videos, I use my custom built console which is based on a 2.6Ghz Celeron, with 1GB of memory and a decent graphics card (see my prfile for more info). I guess it depends on whether or not you want to play videos - if you're only playing music, you can get away with something less speedy (and expensive!)...

Had a toshiba with a PIV in it. Ran so hot I could cook with the fan by the end of a 5 hour set. I love amd. Just because there core runs hotter doesnt mean its not as good as Intel. I am sure a hondas engine runs hotter than a big v8 but which runs smarter :D

a Pentium M 2.0Ghz would be better than your P4 3.2 GHz.
The Pentium M 1.73Ghz would be the same as your P4 3.2 Ghz
And the Core Duo 1.66Ghz would be better than the Pentium M 2.0Ghz
One mustn't think that the processor speed is all that matters. We are talking here about 3 different technologies, P4, Pentium M and Core Duo. Each one better than the other.
Try to find benchmarks of CPUs on internet or in computering magazines, you will be suprised of the scores from the Core Duo ;)

Wow, that's some good info there, thanks for that. That's enough for me to go with the dell;^]

Hi
Just checking.
Does this mean that my Dell Inspiron with a Celeron M 1.4 is actually faster than 1.4Ghz. I bought it at a very low price on Ebay - It's got 1280 Mb Ram. It was an ex-demo machine and had never even been turned on when I got it. It runs VDJ really well (I don't play video) and I was wondering why it was OK with a seemingly low spec.
I was thinking of upgrading, but why fix something if it ain't broke?
