I Took my first steps , so to speak, tonight when out inn town. I asked a bar owner if they would be able to introduce a rock/metal into their line up for the week. Unfortunately they said they only said they only do dance and tribal, however they said they'd pass on my details, http://, msn, mobile number etc. I dont know about you guys, but how did you all get your first gigs? I've done numerous house parties for mates (house, hip hop, and rock/metal) but how did you all get your first major gigs?
I'm gonna make a demo CD in the next few days to distribute in the next week or so to try to aid my cause but what about you guys? how did you get your first "big break"?

I did exactly that in the beginning...
Asked around, made demo cds
Dont give up ;)
Also, get to know the djs.. they are a little "click of people" ... and if you get to know them, and they like you, they might give u a night.. and they you are started :)

yeah, thats what I figured was the best thing to do. I think that the lack of rock/metal DJs is a good sign though because it shows an open market? what do you think? I know there are lots of fans of this type of music, from friends/recommendations etc.
I know the hardest thing is to not give up, and to keep music up-to-date, and this is not that hard to overcome if you know what the croud likes (I'm a regular club go-er so I think I know roughly what they like)
thanks for your help once again DJ-In-Norway!

I got my first ever gig through a lad at college. When I started college I knew nobody, and as I got to know people I'd give them CDs. More and more people started asking for them, and then one of the lads asked me if I'd DJ at a night he was promoting in Manchester. I was only 16, and my hands were shaking like mad. Haha, the memories!

lol. I've done a few house parties and each time I get "the buzz" but I'm really looking forward to the phone call "is this Nebula, I got your contact details from.... I'm interested in hearing you demo CD"
lol I Buzz off house parties, so like any addiction, I'm craving that bit more, and hopefully it won't be too long before I get my own gig at a pub or bar :o) Fingers crossed!!!

best advice would be, as well as handing a cd into the bar manager/promotions manager actually introduce yourself and have a bit of a chat with them about what you play, what you're into, etc. it'll help them remember you. pop back in a week later to ask what they thought of the cd.
do this with 2 or 3 venues. persistance will pay off eventually.
