Firewire 400 and USB2.0 are comparable in spees. Firewire is a little faster overall for most purposes, but either is definitely fast enough for videos, regardless of the format (except maybe raw AVI.)
The reason I had problems when I used USB2.0 for my media is because I was also using the same USB bus for audio (Hercules DJC) and I therefore got occasional hiccups in the audio when loading a large file. Apparently USB protocol is not very good at regulating the bus and so the audio stream would suffer when the bus was clogged with media data.
