Anyone used both the keylock feature in VDJ 4.1 and "master tempo" on some popular CDJ's? Like, for example, the Pioneer CDJ-800 MK2? How do they compare in terms of quality?

VDJ's quality is quite good when performance settings are set to high quality, but the drain on the CPU makes it hard to use... Do CDJ's offer master tempo quality that is as good? Better?

But the new master tempo in VDJ is better than almost any software out there (including profesional non-live studio software).

And it compares well to Pioneer CDJs. Actually I think CDJs have more artifacts than VDJ, but thats hard to say.

But your right. Best Quality MT on VDJ demands good hardware to work, so its for new PC's, and specially for the future (Dual Core / Vista).
 
Hmmm, interesting :) I do have a fairly state-of-the-art computer -- 2 gigs ram, dual core chip, 64 bit, etc... But I have a feeling it's not really being utilized by Windows XP/VDJ -- will Vista put dual core and 64 bit to better use? Will VDJ be able to take advantage of it? Will master tempo become perfect??? :)

Will VDJ utilize dual-core and 64-bit technology in a significant way when Vista comes out?
 
I love VDJ, but the best MT i have heard is on traktor. But other than that, i dont like traktor

Of course ;)

And Direct X 10 with brand new audio stuff .. Vista is made to work better for audio apps

But its still a bit in the future.

I hope Vista doesnt tax our CPU resources enough to make VDJ run slower... you know, with all the Aero stuff and all. Guess you can just disbale it though...
 
@Niems: no, Traktor's time stretching is below VDJ's. Traktor uses phase vocoder, while VDJ uses Dirac. Dirac is better! Try to stretch to 33%: VDJ's MT doesn't make that "reverb" feeling of Traktor!

first post here, I am looking into computer DJing, I have been using various models of CDJ's for the last 6 years, mainly club, latin and dancehall. I am deciding between software at the moment, and from comparing the demo versions that I have used (Traktor 3.1 and Virtual DJ 4.3) am stuck on making a decision upon which to purchase.

The Virtual DJ interface is hands down better and easier to use, ie loop, effects and the general layout makes much more sense (the different cue and play buttons of Traktor make no sense at all) however the one sticking point is the poor quality of the keylock/ master tempo (I experimented with a variety of settings through the preferences pane). It seems a pity that such a great piece of software is let down by such an important feature. Whilst the Master Tempo of Traktor still does not approach the quality of my CDJ-800's I do not think that it will be noticeable to the majority of punters.

As I mix from a wide variety of musical genres the master tempo is one of my most important tools. Can anyone recommend the best software for a good quality master tempo (Serrato, Traktor, Torq, VDJ) or are the programs just not up there at this stage.

I was unable to download the trial of v5.0.7 from download.com. Has the master tempo algorithm been revised substantially in this version as at this point this is the only thing stopping me from purchasing.

One more question for the informed few, which controller would you recommend in terms of quality and portability, (basic DJing ie. beat mixing, effects and some scratching) I am between the Total Control and the Rmx. (running Mac OSX 10.4.11),

You say you were unable to download the latest trial....I would suggest submitting en e-service ticket here. See if you can get the newest trial version. I do not use master tempo or keylock so I can't give any input on it. However, I would always recommend VDJ over the rest... ;-)

and use Internet Exporer if you can.
About controller, Hercules RMX has built in sound card while Numark TC does not. I would go for Numark as it is better quality (people say).
 

Personally I would say that with the right quality settings, VDJ has a very good and useable timestretch feature, but I never use it as I don't often pitch greater than 2%-3% which doesn't usually have a negative effect on the music, so not a feature I use often, although I would say that I get "clicks" when activating/deactivating the keylock.

It is up there with the likes of Pioneer, and yes you are right that the hardware has a lot to do with it to...

As long as your machine is fast enough to allow you to use the "advanced" master tempo option, it seems fine on the ear to me. Unfortunately the speed of the PC I use is such that I can only safely use it on one deck at a time! One day I'll treat myself to a faster computer... :-)

Somebody mentioned above about a click or glitch when keylock is switched on. This happens on mine, but only the first time you use it. At the beginning of a set, I turn it on, turn it off, and hey presto, no more clicks or glitches...

Having used my Pioneer CDJ 1000s for quite a few years and always having the Master Tempo turned on, I can say for sure that the VDJ Keylock is vastly inferior. The sound is nasty to say the least. The trouble is that it is hard to compare as you are trying to adjust an MP3 file which is compressed anyway as apposed to a CD audio file on a CDJ player which is not compressed. I love the quality I can get on the CDJs and was quite disappointed with what VDJ couldn't do is this regard. Of course at the extreme end of things on the CDJs you get bad sound but you can go a long way before that happens.

Really?

Are you running the latest version, and have you tried tweaking the performance options? There is an advanced setting for the master tempo that if selected, sounds waaaaay better than the default mode.

I am running version 5.07. I have the laptop tweaked (Toshiba CORE 2 Duo. 1.6 GHz, 3 Gigs RAM, 7200 RPM internal, 500Gig 7200 RPM External). I have only 13 processes running and I have VDJ settings optimized for best quality. Also running a Neumark Total Control and an M-Audio 410 firewire box. I was disaapointed in the Keylock as I mentioned compared to my CDJ1000s but I do understand that pitching and MP3 is not going to give you the same sound as pitching a CD audio file. I will ask you though if you think the Keylock is better in the most recent version of VDJ. I am a little afraid to upgrade as I have things working so well at this moment.

Well you're already running the latest version, and your hardware sounds pretty top notch, so I dunno what you could upgrade to really! Maybe it is just the mp3s - I'm guessing you're working with decent quality files. I wonder if different mp3 encoders produce different results...

Having used versions 3, 4 and 5, for me the biggest difference was between version 3 and 4 - the master tempo was vastly improved for version 4. I haven't noticed much difference in sound between 4 and 5, although it seems that 5 is a little less resource hungry than 4 was.

Forgive me. I downloaded 5.07 but I am actually running 5.04, I think as the unit is home and I'm at work. I was afraid to upgrade to 5.07 until after it was out for a bit. I use only 320Kbs mp3s. It is not too bad but I have much greater range on the hardware device instead of the software one.
