Topic: Ultimate solution to clicks & pops = new laptop?

Hi,
I have a laptop that should be more than good enough for VDJ but unfortunately i get a lot of clicks and pops when playing two VOBS at the same time. I have tried everything to get rid of them, there is just no way to do it! :(

I probably have too less CPU (2.0Ghz dual core which is around 90% when analyzing & playing 2 VOBs), too bad video card (nvidia geforce go 7600 512Mb) or IRQ conflicts that cannot be solved, or all of the above :)

Now I think of buying a new laptop and this time it MUST WORK PERFECTLY with videos! Can you recommend some certain laptop that has proven to work? I think it should have at least 2.6Ghz+ dual core and high end video card (e.g. nvidia go 7950 gtx) to be sure it works? It must also have at least 4xusb2.0 out and 1xfirewire.

The budget is around 2500 euros but preferably less :)

PS. Does firewire have different IRQ than usb? I have had only usb soundcards so far (hercules, esi u46 and now 2*xp-10). Should i try some firewire soundcard with my current laptop first?

Yes, it is a long list. I have tried pretty much everything what is said there:
http://www.tweakheadz.com/troubleshooting_audio_cards.htm#12
I really have hassled this and that for a month or something :)

My laptop is just not very configurable, you cannot change bios nor IRQ settings, I think the usb soundcards and video card share same IRQ, no matter which usb-port i use.
I have many soundcards as I mentioned, all are usb sound cards, all have clicks and pops.

There is nothing installed on OS except all necesssary for VDJ. I have tried both XP and vista (latter was trial version).

I think one problem is CPU power. If I mix two svcd videos (under size of 100mb), i dont get any pops. But if I mix two VOBs (200mb-300mb), i get cracks and pops.

Only thing I could think of now is to try some firewire soundcard before buying a new laptop.

Buy the perfect small factor pc from SHUTTLE . The SD37P2. It is not a laptop but nor a desktop either.
It is very small and has its own carriage bag. Also the monitor from SHUTTLE is also portable.
I have one here is what I put inside : NVIDIA 8800GTX , 750GB HARD DISK SEAGATE, 150GB 10000RPM Raptor Western Digital Hard Disk (for windows), 2GB ram and of course a E6700 INTEL 2.66 GHZ processor. It has an onboard 7.1 soundcard , 8 usb , 2 firewire, 1 e-sata.
It cost me almost 2400 euro.
It plays even two high definition video clips without any problem.
Think again.
I still have an empty slot for another hard disk, (if you play vob=200mb each, you need at least 2 x 750gb hard disk to carry all classic collection and for future video clips. Plus I can upgrade up to 8gb ram, and when the quad-core gets cheaper I will upgrade to that.

Keep your laptop for music only. I have an Hp 7010nx 1.4 ghz and works great.

If you buy a laptop you still going to need 1 or 2 external powered hard-disks

@ djtonis ....wow gr8 setup my laptop ain't bad but what i'm doing is convert my backup to main by upgrading components ......my backup system is desktop.......when i have all components close to my current idea of ideal then i'm gonna rack it , and make it the main system.

if you can put video on a separate hd(s) .......

my laptp is only 48% full ......it would be a lot less but i keep a copy of the main strip club folder on my C: in case the external drive ever crashes ...... but it could never crash it only works 50 to 80 hours a week .......

gentleman ...... there are many possible tweaks ........ 1 or 2 or 3 of those are what you need to make your particular configuration work , in all likelihood .......

b4 doing anything set a restore point and make sure your recovery discs are handy .........

NEVER do anything major to your main OR back up systems within , say , 3 or 4 days of a gig .......

dedicated music systems are what you need ...... since you can do EVERYTHING else on another system or even on your cell phone ! don't use your music system for anything but.........

here's a couple of suggestions ........ regardless of whether your soundcard is usb or firewire , make sure that the windows firewall is not across that connection ...... turn off wifi connection .......turn off bluetooth , turn off unnecessary services ....... ask the support at the soundcard vendor for recomendations ...... sometimes changing your system priority from programs to background or vice versa is useful........... sometimes energy mgmt settings are a factor , mine are all on never ......

i hope some or all of those help

@ djdeep .......from what you said i'm a bit confused .....what is your soundcard and controller ? are you using vista or not ? if you are using vista are drivers for vista available for your soundcard and controller and are you using them??

if that's all it is that is an easy fix.....

That Shuttle sounds very interesting. Only problem is weight, I am mobile DJ and my gear really should be easily portable - i dont have a car ;)
How much does it weight?

I have already tried Vista trial version. It seemed to use less cpu but there was even more clicks and pops. At least with Hercules MK1 and Esi U46. Maybe those have driver problems...
Now I have 2xXP10, maybe I should try vista again?

Is it possible to install trial version again and again every 30 day? It will take less than 1 hour to install vista + vdj, i can do it once a month to save some $$$... :)

I have 100Gb hard disk with 2 partitions. First one has XP installed. Is it good idea to install Vista on second partition? Or is it possbile to install vista on USB-harddrive?

Anyway, if Vista + XP10s wont work, i will buy some shuttle pc or another laptop. And, yes, it really sucks to pay 1400 euros for stupid laptop that does not work :(

If using Vista just turning on safe mode will eliminate the clicks and pops. I too tried Vista with no luck, but changin to safe mode got rid of the clicks and pops. As far as the Video goes did it work in Vista??? I heard that the 7X00 GO cards had problems in XP but worked ok in Vista. Maybe you need to try Vista again and ask for help. I am gonna try Vista again but I am goin to use the full install not the upgrade as many say there could be problems.

Pops/Clicks occur when audio-buffer runs out ...

MAKE HIGHER LATENCY for your card, or choose AUTO for latency in VDJ performance tab..

Thanks for the help! I will try to install vista again and especially try safe mode. It will be a clean install but on the second partition of hard drive. The first partition contains XP, I hope this wont cause any trouble.

Inviato Fri 13 Apr 07 @ 12:33 pm

safe mode will help.. but thats 3.4 soundquality..

TRY AUTO FOR LATENCY IN VDJ PERFORMANCE TAB!

think I've said that one million times at the forum already;)

But that is the one thing that makes a lot of soundcard issues go away ;)

First impressions with vista and xp-10s.
CPU is suprisingly low with two vobs, around 15%, analyzing is about 5 times faster than on XP . Scratching and bending sound very natural.... :)

...... But unfortunately I still get some pops, not just so much as on XP but still some. tick/untick Safe mode, moving performance tab nor changing to auto latency has no effect whatsoever.

Strange enough, i even get few cracks when playing one or two mp3s? Very strange...
XP is completely problem-free with audio.

Hmmmm...
keep more testing...

Your OS, music, and vobs, are on the same hard drive?

no, i have 500 gb USB hard drive for music and videos.
That is strange situation. On XP, the amount of clicks and pops are related to CPU,
but on vista there seems no difference if CPU is 5% or 90%.
No matter what i have on performance settings ,or do i play audio or video, there is like 1-2 click per 10 seconds when playing.

First I though it might be a bad audio cable, but i can play ie. winamp and bsplayer flawlessly.
