I have two EXT. 500 GB seagate HD's.
They are both about 8 months old.
One get's used about 10 hours a week, while
the other rarely gets used.
I was at a wedding yesterday and noticed that
it shut itself off. I turned it back on okay by the end of the song,
and all was fine for a while.
This happened three times and the third
time it took a while to be able to turn it back on, was really sweatin it out for a while.
What's weird is both my HD's are doing this and they use two different pwer supplies, too.
However, when they are on they retrieve songs and data, etc. without any problems.
Anyone have experience with this sort of thing and can you advise me.

i've experienced this.
it may be either a loose wire that keeps loosing up (from experience)
or powermanagement set to turn the hard disk off every.. minutes not used. (from experience.)
start > settings > control pannel > power options >
== power schemes ==
turn off hard disks: Never
system standby: Never
===============
== advanced ==
when i press the ... : do nothing
===============
hope this helped.

If you installed any additional software for your HDD's, their might be your problem. Also, check that your USB devices don't "save Power" in power management. There was similar problem on the forum, try to find it.

How do I "tighten up" a loose wire if that may be the case.
It didn't occur tonight but I was real careful not to move the unit or touch any wires.

You should replace cables then, no cable should be repaired.

I see ALF. But I don't think t's the cable itself. I think its that little piece inside the HD where the cable plugs in to.

so now you know what the problem is.

That's a nasty one, if it is small USB one like on Digital Photo cameras, most fragile, seen many times broken on people :(
It is hard to repair it....
That's why I took 2,5 inch HDD case that has the same big USB like on Computer ;)

No, it does have the big USB into the computer, but a circular female into a single male pin
inside the HD case.
Now, what is step 2, if we believe the HD pin is loose?

You can replace it or you can try to use guarantee option if there is any. Ask where you bought it can it be replaced.

Yeah, I know, that's almost impossible as it was bought from one of those online discount sites.

Seagate USB drives have a "sleep" mode. I have one and have not been able to figure out how to dissable it.

It tends to go out when I move it, don't matter if it's 3 seconds on or been on 5 hours.
But then it starts up okay.
