Not having AntiVirus is fine, as long as you're not connecting the machine to the internet or installing or copying unscanned files or apps from CD's or Memory sticks.
However, if you are doing these, then i don't mean to sound harsh, but your faith is "blind faith"!
For a system connecting to the internet you really must use all of the following..
Anti Virus,
Anti Spyware
Windows Updates
Firewall
If you don't, chances are your system is already infected.
VDJ will probably perform audio only ok if your system is infected (depends, what it is infected by), but if you use Video you are more likely to notice the problems!
I may of misunderstiood your post, but you really can't leave your system open like that if connecting it to the internet or other possible sources of infection.

Free Anti Virus
http://www.avast.com (Get home addition)
Free Spyware Protection- Realtime (n/a to Vista as it is built in)
