Hi,

This question is for anyone using VDJ with a MIDI controller.

Is there anyone out there, who has been able to hit a button/knob on your midi controller and have a sound effect happen?

Example: hit button and BEATGRID is CHOSEN and ACTIVATES .

I have been able to use my midi for killing base, activating a sound effect that I already chose, but I cannot figure out how to have the button go right to that sound effect and activate in 1 shot.

I am not sure it can be done in V4.3

thanks,

B

In the MIDI configuration, look at the notes for the action - effect_activate - you put the plugin's name in the value field
the action will look like this - effect_activate(BeatGrid)

Yea- C,

I did exactly that- and can get it to work for a SHORTCUT key on keyboard. For some reason, when you hit a button on a midi controller the ABSOLUTE & RELATIVE choices change slightly and even when the effect name is typed in, it doesn't work like a keyboard shortcut.

Have you ever done this on a midi controller, or are you kinda just guessing based on keyboard shortcut?

thanks,

B

@Hoffman

I use a X-Session to trigger multiple effects, and have had no problem.
However, keep in mind that they will best work if you send the commands as NOTES.
Then you just have to set de commands just as keyboard shortcuts.

What kind of controller are you using?

X- Session too!

Can you help me to simply have the a button on the x-session apply flanger or beatgrid to one side?

I use the x-session for other stuff as mentioned earlier, but I can't for the life of me get this to happen. It works no prob for keyboard shortcut but not midi.

thanks for any response- appreciate it.

Hey-

I found the midi.xml file.

Does getting this to work with notes have soemthing to do with this file?

I opened the file and saw all the writing for the already created commands I have on the x-session.

Am i supposed to type a new command here? If so, how do I edit/add to this file? doesn;t seem to let me type on it.

getting closer...

tx,

B

Hoffman -

I think we went through this when you got your X-Session -- do you remember setting up the 0-9 buttons for notes ?

[taken from old post]
if you want to use the 0-9 buttons, might want to read this post -
http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/55358/General_Discussion/Updated_Nuo4_and_xsession_shortcut_xml_files_(downloads_page).html

Specifically the input that talks about changing the buttons from CC to notes.
(It's also on page 10 of the Advance Guide found on the CD)
press button 0 then assign then type 147 then press program twice and type 000
press button 1 then assign then type 147 then press program twice and type 001
press button 2 then assign then type 147 then press program twice and type 002
...
press button 9 then assign then type 147 then press program twice and type 009

Hey C-

Yea- we went thru something a while ago- Good memory!

But I never did use notes. All I ever did was the quick way to assign something to midi.

I'll spend today trying to figure out the above.

Do I have to make all the buttons notes, or can I leave the buttons alone that are already asiigned an effect the other way? (part old way and part notes for the buttons?)

tx,

B

You can convert all of them to notes then just go Change the already assigned buttons to the new NOTE based button.

Here is what my X-session XML looks like -- notice the NOTE entries

<midi version="4" date="26/12/2006">
<ctrl ctrl="24" action="level" chan="1" />
<ctrl ctrl="16" action="level" chan="2" />
<ctrl ctrl="27" action="effect_slider_1" chan="1" />
<ctrl ctrl="19" action="effect_slider_1" chan="2" />
<ctrl ctrl="28" action="effect_slider_2" chan="1" />
<ctrl ctrl="20" action="effect_slider_2" chan="2" />
<ctrl ctrl="31" action="gain" chan="1" />
<ctrl ctrl="31" action="gain" chan="2" />
<ctrl ctrl="23" action="master_volume" />
<ctrl ctrl="10" action="crossfader" />
<ctrl ctrl="30" action="crossfader" />
<note note="1" action="effect_select" value="backspin" />
<note note="1" action="effect_activate" />
<note note="2" action="master_tempo" chan="1" />
<note note="2" action="master_tempo" chan="2" />
<note note="3" action="play_stutter" chan="2" />
<note note="4" action="video_trans" />
<note note="5" action="video_select_trans" value="-1" />
<note note="6" action="video_fx" />
<note note="7" action="effect_activate" chan="1" />
<note note="9" action="effect_activate" chan="2" />
<note note="0" action="crossfader" value="2048" />
<ctrl ctrl="22" action="video_fx_param" />
<ctrl ctrl="29" action="nothing" />
<ctrl ctrl="21" action="nothing" />
<note note="8" action="video_select_fx_multi" value="-1" />
</midi>

I just printed the user guide- man it looks involved. Gotcha on the converting of notes, but I still have yet to MAKE a note to assign an effect. Is it easy to do?

Working on it now.

I'll get it.

here's what mine says:

- <midi version="4" date="26/08/2007">
<ctrl ctrl="10" action="video_crossfade" />
<ctrl ctrl="15" midichannel="6" action="video_trans" chan="1" />
<ctrl ctrl="16" action="video_fx_param" />
<ctrl ctrl="87" action="kill_bass" chan="1" />
<ctrl ctrl="89" action="kill_bass" chan="2" />
<ctrl ctrl="86" action="video_trans" chan="2" />
<ctrl ctrl="20" action="bass" chan="1" />
<ctrl ctrl="23" action="bass" chan="2" />
<ctrl ctrl="31" action="medium" chan="2" />
<ctrl ctrl="28" action="medium" chan="1" />
<ctrl ctrl="90" action="effect_activate" chan="1" relative="true" />
<ctrl ctrl="119" action="effect_activate" chan="2" />
</midi>

I see the difference! You have NOTES and I don't.

Ok C-

I read page 10- Have no clue at all what it means.

I also do not understand this at all:

"press button 0 then assign then type 147 then press program twice and type 000" this makes no sense to me.

questions about making notesL

1) Do I still have to go into "midi configure" in VDJ?

2) Once in VDJ midi configure, do I still press ADD?

this is where I am lost now.

thanks for being pateint. :-)

This is the step for changing the button from a CTRL to a NOTE.

1. Press button 'X' -- this is the button you are changing so start with 0 and repeat for 1 - 9
2. Press the Assign button
3. Enter 147 -- this value changes it from CTRL to NOTE
4. Press the Program button twice
5. Enter 000 -- this value is what is now sent as the NOTE - again start with 000 and repeat from 001 - 009 respectively for the buttons in step 1

Yes, after converting the buttons to NOTEs, go to VDJ MIDI Config and change each of the CTRL entries for the buttons so they get assigned the NOTE value.

Hoffman wrote :

No, you will CHANGE the entries. Only do add for the NEW entries.

Hope that's more clear..

thank you.

Lol, just realised that cstoll answered in here before I PMed you back with the exact same info...

Just remember that when you CHANGE the midi command in VDJ config, you have to press the button in order for VDJ to learn the new command (NOTE x).

Tell us if everything works fine,

Cheers,
Joe

Guys, I'm gonna try what you said.

thanks again.

man mdi notes is so much more invovled- all this is needed just to get sound effects to work? who o why?

It's not a VDJ process. It's the method for changing the the buttons from the XSession manual.

I guess I was asking why does the x-session accept some midi features of VDJ so easily (ex kill base as a CC) and others only work as notes (sound effect activate beatgrid)?

Notes are better as they are on/off -- a control (ctrl) is usually reserved for variants like a knob or fader. But to answer your question - it was luck.
