Topic: Recommended USB Sound Card for Time Code user.

I’m looking to buy a USB soundcard and I could use some help with my decision. (this is my first sound card purchase)

I want something cheap price wise but not quality (if there is such a thing) that works well with time code.

The kit im putting together is a Pioneer DJM500 Mixer, 2 X Pioneer CDJ 800MK2 sitting in a Odyssey FZGS19CDJW Coffin with VDJ PRO 4.3 … im also thinking about using X-Keys from piengineering.com .. or some other small controller (any recommendations ?).

So if you could help a brother out an let me know what sound cards have worked well for you it would be mucho appreciated.

Um, thanks for rattling off the names of some USB sound cards … that’s not really what I was looking for though … and its probably my fault … I didn’t ask the question right.

What im looking for is sound cards other users have used that work well .. that are less expensive…. Ive already seen the u46djmk2 & the numark VV on VDJ’s web site (and I think both of them are expensive'ish) … the Firebox (after doing a search & finding it) is to expensive….. I cant find the u4dj.


Please .. if you are going to assist me with my purchase (thanks everyone in advance) .. put some thought/time into your posts .. im capable of doing a search on the internet and reading reviews … I’m more interested in what users of VDJ have had success with.

Honestly the best sollution is to use a pci card like the delta 1010lt (which works flawlkessly), though firewire might still be better than USB. The problem with most USB cards when using ASIO drivers for timecode is instability, the USB shares IRQ with this & that and on top of sound hiccups the blue screen of death becomes more likely to happen. If firewire is an option but PCI is not then I'd recommend looking into firewire cards. Just remember, you need at least 2 stereo ins and outs for timecodes;^]
 
Tim, I would strongly disagree with your assessment. Every manufacture of DJ software uses USB as their primary connection. Serato - SL1 and TM57 = USB, Torq = USB, MixVibes = USB, VirtualVinyl = USB -- so USB is a viable technology and very usable.

I'm not say it's unusable, I'm just saying it's the least stable of the three. Most high end systems will handle it no problem, but most low end systems will have serious problems with it, especialy if you have only the minimum required RAM. But to be fair the only USB cards I've tried have been the u46dj, fast track pro & the herc mk2;^]
 
@ Tim .... Unfortunately .. my only option is USB ... i'm on a laptop with no fire wire connection. I even did a search for good PCMIA sound cards .. but didn't find any :)

@ Cstoll .... I'm glad to hear the Maya is still in production .. thats an affordable option for me.


@ DJ in Norway ... do you like the U46 better then the Maya ? ... I'm not sure I can get that in the states.

Well this is a pretty acurrate post about problems many have with USB soundcards.

It might work 100% out of the box, but there are chances you get usb drop-outs and such, due to IRQ sharing problems etc.

Also, latency on a usb soundcard is 11-23 ms, while PCI cards are lots lower.

That being said, most cant even notice the difference. But USB soundcards are more sensitive to potential conflicts.

Both works pretty good with VDJ, but the U46 might work better with last generation and 2 generation timecode vinyls.

u46 has hardware preamp, and in theory works better than the maya.

But most users have good experience with both.

I'd recommend trying to get the U46dj first though, if you can.

Ahhh, well if USB is your only option I'd go with the maya, never used it myself but most folks here who have seem to be pretty satisfied with it.

@Norway, that's the first thing I noticed (latency) when I started using the delta 1010lt, lowest possible settings and still great sound and performance. That was the end of my searching for a card on my timecode system;^]
 
 
Well the U46MK2 is a better quality device. the sound rendering is better, the hardware is higher quality and it has phono preamps to play real records. its also plug and play on VISTA, XP or OSX which is nice (multi channel or dirext X driver). So it's more of a semi-pro device that you can use for a gig.

The maya works fine but is more for a beginner profile, especially if your are going to use timecoded control CD or Vinyl I don't trust the stability and have read a bunch of posts on the mixvibes forums of users having issues in clubs. Ideal for a bedroom use :)
