Thinking about Upgrading OS from XP to Vista. Is it worth the price tag it carries. I've been pricing up a copy and here in Uk you can get the Home premium edition for about £150 plus or minus a few quid.
Now also I been told that vista is quite power hunger and I should upgrade my ram from 1gb,to 2gb to allow for it run VDJ good. It runs fine on 1gb and XP for me at the mo. If I do this is another £60-£70, so to fully upgrade it will cost me about £210.
Is it worth it.

P.S What are these OEM copies of vista, what does it mean and why are they cheaper.

I like Vista but got it when I bought a new system.
OEM version is for people who build systems. Upgrading your RAM may entitle you to an OEM version.
Use a flash drive as RAM. One of Vistas uniquie features

vista - power hungry memory hog.
our sister company (sports bar) bought a computer with vista on it - they cant hate it. constantly asking them if they are sure or if they trust the software/install/etc. etc. they're planning on putting xp on it soonest.

Isn't XP going to be non supported next year.
Inviato Thu 01 Nov 07 @ 9:14 pm
xp will still be supported for many years. you just won't be able to buy it anywhere next year.
i would only go to vista if you're having problems with video mixing. if your video freezes, then i think that vista will fix that problem. if you want vista for an all around OS upgrade, i would say wait until you get a brand new computer. i would probably wait a year or two when faster processors are out.

friend stay with xp for a little longer, vista has been a pain in the arce for me so far.

Jimmy you dont need to buy anything to buy the oem version of Vista. I had issues the first time I tried Vista with my other system, I just installed it again today and to me the performance was better than XP, all will know tomorrow if i have issues:)

All they have to do is turn off UAC.

thats true brian but why not let someone else work out the bugs before venturing out and discovering america all by yourself? many vista updates will be up soon to deal with all the crappy issues it was realesed with, I have VDJ on an xp system running flawlessly, and until i can run it for hours on vista without problems i will not use it.
Inviato Fri 02 Nov 07 @ 3:55 am
But while bench testing my machine today, video with Vista was totally better than with XP, dont know if I will be sayin this after today, but from what I see it is nite and day. I have tried Vista in the past with my old single core pc and it was crap, but with the one I just built I think all might be good so I will end with this, if all is workin fine in XP, why bother updating to Vista, but if u are runnin into video issues and such maybe Vista will answer your needs:)

eh.
we're running VDJ on a 3ghz dell bought in march 2006, 2g RAM, can't exactly remember what kind of video card we put in it but i think its a Geforce something-or-other, and a creative xfi soundcard. it has had exactly 2 problems in the last 9 months with stability (more on that in a sec) it plays video flawlessly, the music sounds fantastic, and i've watched other dj's jaws drop when they hang out in the booth and watch us go...
that being said, the reason i think that we get such great performance?... we're still using 3.4, and will continue using it until i can get version 5 to work non-stop on our test-bed computer for at least 1 month. version 4 was nice, but we had some issues. the 2 problems we've had? a manager (since been fired) who decided to use the computer at work to play online poker while i had a video playlist working during the first hour, and me forgetting to turn off the autoupdater after one of the security updates.
and while learning the ins-and-outs of 5 on a vista machine at home and at the sportsbar i've had to listen to quite a few complaints about both vista and 5. most of which related to automix and playlists. they have had some really great results with it just playing, but during the slacktime between games and karaoke and whatnot they've had 5 crash or lock up their computer up to 6 times in one night. still trying to figure out why.
i WANT to use 5 at work.. i really do. excepting for that single deck automix i think its the greatest thing since sliced bread and drunk strippers on their night off. i keep hearing about people using it and having no problems, but if we have to buy a new computer to do it the boss aint gonna be too happy.
know what i mean?

Ya lost me at DELL..... lol anyhoo if ur havin no luck with Vista take that thing back to XP and see how she works, if it doesnt you will be out od what $89 (XP oem)??? I think the Poker on the system is a bad Idea and I know what ur talkin about as that is what I am dealin with on other pcs at work. If 3.4 runs great for what ur doin stick with it, the only way I see to stability out of 5 is A) dedicated to VDJ B) Fresh install (XP or Vista) C) have a complete database (fully analyzed).

On Amazon's best seller list, XP Home and Pro come in at #20 and #24 respectively. vista doesn't even show up until #75.
Of course, the best OS available comes in at #1 and #2:

Thanks for the advice guys,
Been talking to one of the tech geeks at work this morning and he has said, don't even think about getting vista until the first service pack comes out. There are still a few problems with it and to stick with XP till then.
Also he said that XP will be supported by MS and have updates till early 2009.
