i was thinking about getting a hardware controller (numark possibly), i am wondering if i could use any custom skin in vdj with it(i love mixstation skin!)
the skin it uses seems too simple to me and doesnt have all the features i use (mainly skip back/forward 1 beat/4 beats).

Any skin can be used with a controller. The controller will have no effect on the skin and vice-versa.

so the contoller would still work with the skin even though the skin wont be laid out the same as the controller(doesnt have dials for effects or anything)? Is there a controller that has a similar layout to mixstation v4

Skins only effect the way the program looks on your desktop. No, I know of no controller that has a similar appearance to Mix Station.

so if i buy a controller i dont have to use the software that comes with it(cue in this case), but can continue to use reg vdj

Depends on the controller. Also CUE and VDJ are the same program....
