I have been using two older Toshiba Satellite laptops for a few years now. They were single core, 1.3 GHz processor with 1.5 GB of RAM. Worked great for music and karaoke, but not so good with videos (which I just recently started working with).
This past week I bought a nice Toshiba that Best Buy had on sale for $430. For those interested you can go to their website and search for 9300428. It runs Vista Premium, has a 2.16 GHz dual core Pentium processor, 4 GB of RAM and a nice dual-layer DVD drive (which actually reads the subcode on karaoke discs for you karaoke DJs out there who had older model Toshiba's that couldn't).
I ran it at my show Friday night and it was awesome. It handled everything very well (although I haven't tried ripping a karaoke song while DJing yet). MP3, karaoke and video files all loaded very fast. In fact, I forgot to load a song in the other player and realized it about 5 seconds before the song was going to end. I loaded the next song and it was ready (completely loaded) when the song ended and I pressed play.
Of course there are a few things I don't like. First, I am not used to Vista, so optimizing it and finding certain things was a bit of a challenge. The touch pad is not counter sunk like the older models. It is flat and will take a bit of getting used to. And the USB and VGA video ports are on the side instead of the back. Overall, I can get used to all of these things because of how nice and smooth the thing ran at my show. I did have one weird thing happen at my show. I had set up automix, had a video playing and another video lined up. At the end of the video the next video started playing, but there was no sound until the first video ended and the next song was loading underneath it. That only happened one time. Not exactly sure why. The only thing I really don't like is that it is pre-loaded with Vista and does not come with a recovery CD or DVD to install a fresh copy. So I am really hoping that I do not have an serious problems.
So, for those of you, like me, who can't see (or afford) spending a ton of money on a laptop, check this one out. You may like it too.

Hi mate just to let you know regarding the fact you dont have a recovery disc.
Toshiba laptops all come pre installed with some software that lets you create your windows vista recovery disc. Im not quite sure what it is called but if you look through your manual or the laptop you will find it so i would make sure you create one sooner rather than later.

test out ripping while playing at home b4 you do it at a gig .....
in my case i had to set my secondary ide channel (cd/dvd drive) to ultra dma in order to rip and play simultaneously ...
i use audiograbber which is free abandonware .... i rip to .wav , not mp3
.wav files are much larger but sound better
that lag you spoke of may have been caused by an external drive
