Have been reading recently that VDJ6 is giving better sound. My hearing is not the greatest so I would appreciate your assessments on the sound of various players such as VDJ, OTS, Winamp, etc..

'The Best Sound' is very subjective and will depend on individuals.
I think the biggest point to make here is VDJ takes pride in outputting 'raw' sound; in other words audio that hasn't been artificially altered in an attempt to sound better.
That being said the sound will only be as good as the quality of audio file, sound card, computer speed, and audio equipment combined.
VDJ starts with raw sounds, and then allows you to tweak as little or as much as you like.
VDJ6 probably doesn't 'sound' better than in previous versions, unless your talking about the scratch engine, which has been improved significantly in V6.
