So I only know the very basics of Virtual DJ from trying out the demo. I used my computer mouse to do that, and as you might've imagined, it didn't turn out too well.

I have been looking for a comprehensive FAQ or database to help me understand the following questions, but everything looks scattered and incomplete.

How does Virtual DJ work with external controllers? Do they have to be a particular MIDI controller or a Numark CDJ, or can it be just about any external table? I have two Stanton C313 tables and a Stanton M202 mixer. Are they compatible with Virtual DJ? If so, how do I connect them to my laptop?

Then, once they're connected to the laptop, can I make changes using my tables and they will show up real-time on my screen? For example, if I move the pitch slider up, will it move up on the screen? And when I add effects such as flanger, keychange, etc. though the Virtual DJ program, would I hear those through my headphones which are connected to my mixer?

Lastly, what would you say are the most useful components of using Virtual DJ over just using turntables and a mixer?

go buy an external 4 in 4 out soundcard to plug into your laptop. then connect your hardware to the sound card and set up vdj for use with the external timecodes.

you can not however plug them up then play real vinyl/cd's on your tables, it has to be timecodes. erm think thats about it pretty much. not rocket science really, you just gotta have that soundcard to be able to get the full effect of vdj.

I still don't totally understand. What is a timecode?

hello,

You can use any CD-Player and Mixer for VirtualDJ. VirtualDJ Pro with a 4.0 soundcard act like a dual deck, so you can connect to your mixer directly.

When you want some hardware to control you VirtualDJ, without using the mouse or PC keyboard, some of us use a MIDI Console, like Hercules DJConsole (MK2 o RMX, etc) or Denon DN-HC4500 (or S1200 or 3700, etc) or Pioneer CDJ-400, etc. When I mode the console fader, then I could move VirtualDJ software too in the screen as I move the console fader. Same for all other controls, like pitch, tones (bass-mid-treble) effects, and other things.

Other user also like to use special TIMECODED CDs or Vinyls. Timecode is a special signal that is recorded on a CD or vinyl and then put this one on either CD-Player (Timecode CD) or Vinyl Turntable (timecode Vinyl). You can control play, pause, cue, fwd-reverse and pitch control, just like normal vinyls or cds, but those control the song that is loaded in VirtualDJ software.

TO do this last one, you need VirtualDJ Pro + 4.0 or better sound card, with 2 Stereo Line Inputs and 2 Stereo Line outputs (at least), like Maya 44 USB, ESI-Pro U46DJ, M-Audio FireWire 1824, M-Audio Delta 44, Echo AudioFire 4, or even an SSL-1 or 3 box, or VirtualVinyl box too.

The great advantage of using VirtualDJ Pro over traditional CDs or Vinyls... is forget about CD folders and bags, forget a scratched CD or Vinyl, or a "missing in action" cd... You can go with your laptop, an external hard disk and all your audio collection (I mean ALL that thousand of CDs and more) and also hang up with videos, karaoke and play them even in regular CD-players and turntables using timecodes... You can believe it until you see it working.

You can check some tutorial videos in VDJPedia (help-wiki on this page) to see some of those features working.

Hope this help you understand about this.
