Topic: Supplying Power to Lighting Truss

Questo argomento è obsoleto e potrebbe contenere informazioni obsolete o errate.

Anyone have any good ideas on a good way to power up to the top of my truss and to distribute power across the entire length of the truss to provide power for lights along the length?

In the past I've used a power squids (1 plug -> 5 plug) w/ extension cords to get power down the length. My truss is about 12 feet long.

Any products you recommend? Thanx.

At Walmart you will find yellow flat 5 gang adaptors, I put two together and hose clamp them to the truss 2 each side.
They plug into each other so its a 9 in total.
If you have that store near you...

They stay right on the truss permanentely and wire up is a snap.
I have two 50' cords to power up each side.

you don't say whether you need the lights/power on all night or not, so i'm going to assume you dont and need to have the lights switched on individually or in pairs etc.

ok depends on how good you are with electrics, i would advise these in which to get power to individual lights. http://www.images2.co.uk/Cable_Leads_Connects/Bulgin_And_Elvcon.Original_Bulgin_Plugs,Sockets,Patch_Boxes_And_Splitters_To_2002/

for your truss side of things, you will have to purchase or make your own distribution box from which you make fly leads out to each light.

from your distribution box you will need an adequate length of multicore cable rated or greater than the load it will carry and terminated with a bulgin socket.

(you may have to run two multicore cables to the SB depending on how many units you want switchable)

(obviously you can purchase similar items with bulgin sockets)

you now plug these into a bought switch strip with enough bulgin sockets to suit or alternatively you can make your own switch board,

hope this helps or if you need greater explanation just let me know

I created a multi cable myself. I have in the russ:
- 4 Martin scanners
- 2 Botex T4 dimming bars of Botex light bricks (4 channel switch pack)
- 4 Par cans attached to he Botex T4 bars
- 2 Flower effects and 2 Derby effects connected to the light bricks

So I created 1 cable wchich contains 2 power leads (1 for the Scanners and 1 for the Botex T4 bars or light bricks) and 2 DMX leads. The power and DMX leads are split right at the spot where the scanner or light brick / T4 is atatched on he truss. I created it so that it is fitting to a 4m and 6m truss. This cable could be attached within a minute to the truss, than attach the lights and connect the cables and it is up and running in 5 minutes. Before I had that cable I had all separate cables, whick took much more time to setup and tear down.
I could post some pics.

WALMART...Yup, I got that store around these parts...that evil, evil store. It sucks me in weekly.

@tayla

I am using DMX to control my lights, so I'm going for an always powered option.

@Superstom

I like the idea of creating my own multi cable. I have 3x4foot sections of Global truss. I'm thinking I could prewire and ziptie them to each section of the truss. Then each one will be able to get DMX in+out and power at each spot. Thinking a maximum of 2 lights on each 4 foot section of truss for a total of 6 lights, might be able to squeeze in 3 on each 4 foot, giving me 9 plug-in spots.

Pictures would be great!

@everyone

I'm trying to figure out the best setup for my following lights:
- 8 x ADJ 64 LED PARs
- 2 x ADJ DMX LED StarBall
- 1 x ADJ REVO III LED
- 2 x ADJ X-MOVE LED
(Yes, I like my LEDs :p)

Typically I'll use the following configuration on my truss:
- 4 x PARs evenly spaced
- 2 x starballs between the 2 sets of PARs
- 1 x Revo III right in the middle.

Then I'll use the other 4 remaining PARs for uplighting around the room, and then the X-Moves somewhere (haven't figured out a good place to put these yet).

Let me know you think. I'll try to get some pics up as well.

I use an Elation CoPilot III for remote controlling my lights as well as providing power to my truss.

Here are a couple of pix...

As you can see I don\'t have the truss set up in my studio. I have a single light pole setup here but normally this controller/power box for the copilot will mount on each crank stand of my truss. The CoPilot III comes with 2 of these LC-4SP boxes, each gets mounted on the cranks stands of each side like shown here.

Here is a closeup of one of the LC-4SPs.

And here area couple shots of the Elation CoPilot III rack-mounted control unit in my rack.

If your handy with a soldering iron, and do not mind putting in some labor, fabricating your own wires is the way to go. I often generate cables for shorter spans. It just looks cleaner. Start looking through blogs here. A few pro users have very nice diagrams on how to wire things up, often with detailed explanations.
