Hey guys!
Im starting to work on building up my mobile djing work, I plan on doing some weddings and such over the summer, but I need to get some information. (Obviously) I am a PC DJ, and I love being one. I have done many smaller events, one wedding, etc, but I want to start doing more. I use my personal laptop while djing, and 95% of my music library is pirated. With now having the option of Netsearch, I plan on converting most of my DJ music to Netsearch cached music. But obviously, I want to keep my music still on my laptop. Pretty much what Im asking is should I worry about some FCC agent with an IT degree showing up and plugging in some super amazing flash drive into my laptop, and then placing some cuffs on me. I really want to expand my buisness, but I want to know how often things like this happens?
Have any of you ever had an investegator check out your computer?
Please let me know, thanks!

sillly question here, you know its pirated so therefore you also know its illegal to broadcast it. its going to be highly unlikely that someone is going to check your music but either way you should "not" broadcast pirated tracks.
im a bedroom dj and have quite a bit of music that i cant use outside of my bedroom. and i never will use it. except at home. plan the gig and buy the tacks you need. even if you have origional cd's and vinyal it still doesnt give you the rights to broadcast to a crowd so you need to be verry carefull with what you use.

Well see thats what I am saying. I dont plan on using any illegal music, or at least attempt to not use it, and only using the legally downloaded from netsearch

1) Select all your PIRATE mp3 and keep only the songs that you need to have (not all the music that you never use )
You can open history in Vdj ...for ex. 1/january /2010 - and add all the songs to a playlist - then you go to 2/january and add again ...and again with all the days ... You will have a BIG playlist BUTTTTT with a lot of duplicate songs ... delete all duplicate songs and save as MY SONGS for ex.
Create a New Folder called MY SONGS in one of your hard disk .
Now Open your MY SONGS (you will find it in playlist ) ... select all the songs and right click >>>copy to >>> MY SONGS -
NOw you have only the music that you are using .
2) Try to buy all this songs in a cheaper place like Itunes (0,99 each) - You must to RENAME all the new LEGAL SONGS like this :
From MAdonna - Give it 2 me to Madonna (Itunes) - Give it 2 me .....and then delete the PIRATE MAdonna song . When somebody ask to you you will know where you bought the song .
Where I put Itunes you can put the other places : Beatport - JUno - etc ...
3) You can do in a different way .... play your pirate songs in your night ....next day you can go to Itunes or the other legal sites to buy all the played music . I repeat ...try to keep only the songs that you need .
4) Go for a djpool service like www.zipdj.com ..they have all the mainstream music (pop . dance , r&b , hip hop ) for only 50 dollars at month or 300 a year (Special Christmas Offer ) - If you want more special music just go to some good places like Beatport or Dance-Tunes.com ....
Dance-tunes.com is a very good place and cheap ....Good for Electro & HOuse music ...you can buy a special pack .....I pay 100 euros for 200 credits ....1 old song is only 1 credit (0,50 each song) ..you need 2 credits for the new songs (but it's also cheap : 1 euro each song)
5) If you play R&B or hip Hop you can get very good Music LEGAL and FREE here : http://www.digiwaxxmedia.com/ you need to review the song but it's FREE .
You will see that you don't need to use more than 200 songs ..and maybe you will have the MY SONGS folder with less than 200 . We are talking about 200 dollars /euros for be LEGAL & you will be happy .
Some people have 50.000 songs !!!! or even more ....if you have 50.000 KEEP them ...but in another hardisk ....you can always take a look at the "BAD HD" -
You can start with 100 songs , but every new song will be LEGAL ....
If you are using 80's or 90's ...there's a lot of good collections (8 - 10 cds ) called BEST OF (for ex.) and they are cheap ...It's nothing ...
If you play LATIN music ...you can also buy all the complilated CDS with best of reggaeton for ex.....then you can rip to your hard disk ...In this case you must NAME the songs like this : Madonna (Cd 001) - Give it 2 me . (I have more than 700 cds)
There's also other service on cds ...every month 6-7 cds with only new music :for only 69,95 http://www.mailordercentral.com/djwholesaleclub/prodinfo.asp?number=XPLATNUM - all the maisntream music is there : ALL .
With Zip Dj + Xmix + Itunes we can have ALL ..
If you are a House DJ ....well ...is easiest ...because you don't need so much music ...my sets are only house & electro style ... I have Zipdj + Beatport , and all the other ...i have all for less than 100 at month .

Dude good luck... when you put out a specific song request list to the client and they come back with alot of music that you don't have and you need to get them. Its very hard to resist the urge to download from a p2p network. I would say netsearch is your safe option.
This discussion never happened.. lol

Then ...you are not doing your job . You must to have the music ...You are the dj ...not the people ... If you accept papers with request you are a rockola not a dj .
If you need to have all ..and you are taking money for play music ..then U must to buy all ....simply .
If somedoby comes runing to you asking for a song that you haven't just go runing to Itunes or other legal site ...

soooo...
in a nutshell..
What you want to know is:
whats your chances of getting caught?
No one can answer that.. Because there are so many variables.. do you use video? or Karaoke?
Do you work Mobile or Club?, How much do you have to lose?, how "important" is your "name", how many enemies do you have?, etc etc etc..
Since I can't think of any DJ thats been nailed for it yet.. I would have too say the chances are pretty small..
When they decide to start cracking down on DJ's.. hopefully you wont be the first to go down..

To answer your questions on how 'big' my empire is:
I have only done gigs for people who I had known ahead of time, such as friends, family, church, school, etc. Over this summer, I plan on trying to do a few weddings (maybe 4 or 5). I have talked to some fellow DJs, and one of them told me when they were DJing an event, an investigator actually checked their computer for whether their music was pirated or not. They did so aparently by reviewing their ID tags. Has anyone had something like this happen to them?

Why does it matter? will your eithics or decisions change depending on how many people say Yes or No?
or are you simply hoping someone will state how a person gets caught, so you can figure out a way not to get caught?

ASAP - As soon as p..... - You don't need to plan - You mus't to be legal right now ....
How many hours are you thinking to play ...in one night you will never play more than 6 hrs.... with 100 songs it's enought if you chooose the correct song ...yoiu will be play no more than 7 , 8 songs x hour -
The BIg problem here for you ...(just my point of view) is that you have tons of GB with illegal music .... Do you really need all this music ??
If you know the people in your parties then you must know what they like ..if not , change to other job .
I told You : 1) select the music ...leave only the good songs and keep de pirates in other HD .
2) Buy some songs .. you can rock the party with 100 songs ...you don't need more ... (but you want to see 50.000 , I know )
Why you have tons of GB ?? : Just because you can take them for free . If you must to pay , you must listen before to buy .
If somebody comes to the party , you can show you the invoices ... nobody will see the tags (I always delete Tags ) but I keep the invoices .
Go legal if you want to sleep at night ;-)
I don't know if you can use in USA ...but there you have Napster !!! cheap and you have allllllllllllllllll .

You'd better buy your music legal as cd or download.
Remember ! All the Netsearch songs (cached songs) must be revisited after about 1 month before you could play them !!!
When the song is removed from the web you are no longer able to play your cached files.

I use Napster and it's great. $15 a month and I can get damn near any song I want quick and easy, with good quality. Legal music sounds better! :D

promo only has there new weekly subscription. they send you a cd each week with all the hits from hip hop to country. there new subscription is much better than the monthly cds because they can stay more up to date on current tracks instead of you getting a cd with the song you needed 2 weeks ago. cost for month is $45 dollars. small price to pay to have legit copies of what you need. not to mention that you take the risk of virus downloads on a p2p site or bad versions of songs that skip or have some wacky dj talking in the background...so I've heard.
stick to itunes or napster for your purchases and your computer will stay much safer as well as your house, car, boat and everything else you plan on purchasing illegally. lol
oh, and make sure you claim all those cash bar gigs with the IRS....

fair answer..
Its not that slow actually, I realize you don't want to go out and drop $2000 on music in one shot, but you CAN start today..
come up with plan and stick to it..
IE:
step 1: get yourself a subscription service or a promo service.. (their are tons of legal subscription services made for DJ's)
Step 2: make a list of the older songs that you NEED to have.. start scouring Amazon for compilations, subscription services for older back catalog stuff, etc etc, YOU WILL BE AMAZED AT WHAT IS OUT THERE, LEGAL, AND CHEAP! note: this takes a lot of work but can be SOOO WORTH IT!
step 3: anything you can't get 100% legal, then use Itunes (Itunes, Napster, etc is a bit of a grey area)

the older music is very easy to find ....just go to a cd store and buy some collections ...they have 80's boxes - 90's , etc ... & you can complete the OLD folder with Itunes for only 0,99 each ..
BTW : I bought a 80's collection ....10 cds for only 20 euros !! - other good collection DISCO music (70's) very very cheap ..

The massive library is just a personal music collection. Mainly stuff I just listen to, but would never really dj with. Can someone please explain what he meant a few posts up about needing to check every month?
