I gather that no one answered because there isn't always a right or wrong. If it works for you then it is the best for you. It may not be good for someone else because each person has a slightly different setup.

Personally, I don't like aggregate devices for the Mac, which I assume is how you setup the first picture. In earlier versions of VDJ I had to use aggregate audio and some other tricks to get some of my audio gear to work. With the current version supporting advanced configuration, I use that instead of either configuration you displayed because it gives me exact control of audio paths. This is important when you have more the two pairs of stero outputs and inputs. In my case, neither of you screens would work for me.

To sum up, there is more then one way to do it but the most important is rather it works for you.

I have no experience, but I still second cwfluke's opinion to avoid aggregate devices if you don't absolutely need them. KISS (Keep it simple, simply) is a good way to roll.

One detail, the third picture is not the MIDI setup, it's the Audio Devices setup. It controls the different audio devices.

The best sound setup is the one that works for you...

There is another way of recommended settings ?
If I understand correctly there is a way to work without aggregate devices ?

Aggregate devices are so that you can combine multiple sounds cards into a single consolidated virtual sound card. This is good for software that can only address one sound card. It assigns the sequence of the stereo pairs 1&2/3&4/5&6 in the output and only one multiple channel sound card.

If the software can address multiple sound card, which VDJ does, you can set it up without aggregate and choose multiple sound cards. This assigns the first two channels of each sound card in the order you select so that 1&2 is the first card and 3&4 is the second card. For you, this is most likely the best from what little is known about your setup. This is the simplest way.

The third way is mainly if you need to assign specific stereo pairs to multiple cards with multiple channels. As an example, I have a MOTU Ultralight as my main audio but also use a Logitech USB sound card and a DeeJay Trim 4x6. The ultralight has mixing capabilities and uses 1&2 for mains. I also need to output the four decks individually, which is 3&4/5&6/7&8/9&10 on the MOTU. I then need to send the effects out but don't have any more analog on the MOTU so I need to go out either the Logitech or Trim. This requires you to choose Advanced Configuration for the output, which will allow specific mapping of each card and each pair for specific outputs and inputs.

Which method is best? Only you can decide. If you keep it simple then it is easy to setup at gigs. The best advice is to experiment with your specific setup to find out what works for you. Since no one knows your setup other then the simple screen shots, no one can recommend the best way. Do you have more then two CDJ's? Do you have an external mixer or are you using VDJ as the mixer? If you have an external mixer, how many channels? Do you have more sound cards? Are you adding samples to the audio stream within VDJ or needing to go out to the mixer?

You will also find that this changes over time as you tweak your system and add/remove gear.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think you are working without the aggregate device in the 2nd example, since you are addressing them as individual audio cards.
