Recently ive been having conversations with other people in the industry with regards to promoting and advertising their services.
Personally for me what works is that im constantly out there, when people see what I do they feel more comfortable hiring me.
However, I know of friends who have scrapped the idea of websites altogether, and they swear on facebook pages and profiles, they insist they make you more approachable. Others swear by Google adwords, twitter, etc...
In my opinion i can see the relevance of having an established website where you can post your services, rates, packages, pictures etc... but that can also be done on facebook and/or google plus... I can see how a website may make you look reputable versus a facebook profile.
One friend mentioned QR Codes and how you can instantly stir the curiosity in people and refer them to your URL, be it facebook, twitter, google, whatever...
With what is available today, whats working for you? Does it come down to old fashioned word of mouth, or is there more to it nowadays?
Is it the wording? the graphics used? Colour combination? etc...
i can see how this ad is a fail http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-services-entertainment-DJ-Service-W0QQAdIdZ324845601

I promote my services with business cards, Demo Cd's, Facebook & I have lots of pictures on my Tablet. I will show the person thats interested in hiring me my setup and pictures from previous events. I also upload free mixes with different genres on facebook for anyone to listen. I want people to hear my style so they can have an idea of how i play my sets. It works for me because i recieve tons of calls for gigs.

The link i posted is to an ad (not mine, on a craigslist type of page) with lousy wording, an example of poor marketing.. it reads...
Flat rates, NO hidden fees, NO set time limit, NO BULL. Lazer lighting, and use of upto 2 mic's for speaches (if needed) at NO extra charge. I don't charge by how many people at your event, or give you one price upto a certain time, then another price after that time has passed. I crossfade original tracks exactly how the artist inteded in the first place, without the "scratch mixing" or "looping" a track that seems to go on forever with the same beat all night long. No wonder people throw up at parties. If you are looking for an "old school" DJ that plays 50's 60's dance, Country, Rock and Roll, 80's dance, Club dance, Reggae & Calipso dance, and today's hottest R&B dance hits.

For promotions. I try to go out to clubs when I am not playing. Maybe 1-3 time a month and try to meet the club promoters and club owners. I manage to get a guest DJ gig from this every so often.
I also send out demo CD's and press kits to clubs and bars in the area that I would like to play at. This is actually how I got my residency now. Going on 6 months and I have not been fired yet, so it I must be doing alright. I've also been designated the back up DJ just in case anyone calls in sick or cancels.
For events I DJ, I tend to use Facebook to promote it. Also there are quite a few colleges in the area, so I put up flyers at their bulletin boards.
Been a year now since my return to club DJ'ing, my Facebook fan page has about 720 fans. At my gigs I get about 3-5% of that to show up so far. At least those are the ones that I know of cause they come up and say hi.
I tend to not like to work with club promoters as most of them are shady and tend to now pay the DJ's their worth. I mainly try to hit clubs that do their own bookings. But I continue to promote myself with both club promoters and club owners.
