I've been using VDJ (videos only) for a few years now on a Windows XP P4 3GHz desktop with 512MB RAM and 256MB ATI video card without any issues except for the VDJ interface (not the playing video and audio) freezing when the HDD is sleeping and I'm trying to browse or search on the sleeping HDD - once the HDD has spun up again, everything continues to work without any issues. Recently I've bought an ASUS laptop (N56VM-S4060X, i7 2.3GHz, 8GB DDR3 RAM, nVidia Geforce GT 630M with 2GB dedicated RAM, Win 7 Prof 64 bit & 4 x USB3.0) I've removed bloatware, tweaked everything according to all the info I've found in these forums and everything is now working, but not as smooth as on the very, very old XP box.
I've tried various combinations of options for video memory using the registry tool, but can someone please explain to me what the optimum settings should be. Initially the VideoMemFree was 1991 and VideoMemMaxUse was 0, According to the wiki pages and forum you should adjust the VideoMemMaxUse to half the value of VideoMemFree. I've tried half the value, I've tried it when VideoUseAllMemory is checked and unchecked and I've tried the options for Speedload and nVidiaFreezebug (which is apparently only for two specific older chipsets which had issues). When I set VideoMemMaxUse to something like 500 or 1000 or VideoUseAllMemory is checked, the video starts to flicker and eventually goes black after about 5 to 15 minutes – when VideoMemMaxUse is set to 0 or 1, the video plays fine for hours. What should this value be and what does it mean if it is set to 0 or 1? Another question - what is the "VideoYV12Bug" for - is it only applicable to the Intel HD3000/4000 video cards?
One issue which I experience a lot in this set-up is that the interface freezes a lot when I load another video onto a player or browse or search etc. etc. – the audio and video continues without interruption, but the interface freezes for a few seconds – this happens a lot and a hell of a lot more than on the very old and supposedly much slower XP PC. The CPU is idling – only the first or first two blocks are lit. I’ve also tested the latency with DPC latency checker – all green bars – not even full green bars – only about ¼ to ½ the maximum height of the green bars.
Another issue which I have always experienced on both old and new PCs are the following. When autodj is running (background music) and you right-click on any track in the playlist, except for the next pre-loaded track, and select mix now, the currently playing video and audio freezes for a moment before the selected track is loaded and mixed in. – Is there some tweak or setting which would stop this from happening?
I’ve also got a Gemini CNTRL-7 controller which I sometimes connect to the laptop, but the performance issues occur with or without the controller connected and the and DPC latency checker graphs are the same with and without the controller connected. When the controller is connected, I tried fiddling with the latency (audio) settings in VDJ, but it, as expected, only influenced the audio and not the latency with controls on the CNTRL-7. Is there any way to improve the latency of the controls on the CNTRL-7?
Any help and suggestions appreciated.

About the video / interface problems:
One thing I had to do: nowadays the notebooks with a "big" Nvidia videocard also have an onboard intel (chipset) video card on the side. The notebooks are configured for Always using the intel card, until the notebook needs higher graphic support/memory. It than should enabling the Nvidia card. This is done because of Intel's card lower power consumption when you do not need graphic performance.
I saw that Vitual DJ is not triggering the Nvidia card, so my video's didn't play well. I had to configure my Nvidia card to "use Always Nvidia card". It costs me more power consumption, but I'm Always connected to an power outlet with my notebook. So no problem.
Now the intel card is useless, because Nvidia is Always on, but it rocks with that Nvidia card!
Freezing when HDD is sleeping:
Of course it's freezing than... Configure your power settings of your notebook (Windows settings) with "High Performance" and do not allow disk to go to sleep (or choose an higher idle time like 30minutes or an hour)

The video card is already configured as per the information above. The freezing in the interface was solved by disabling the Speedload setting using the Registry Tool. I would just like to have some more information regarding the VideoMemMaxUse setting - sometimes it is recommended to set it to half the value of VideoMemFree, other said to adjust it to 0, others to 1 and I've found a few posts where 16 was the magic number. I would like to know what the advantages and/or disadvantages will be when it is for example set to 1 or to 16.

Ok, I can't help you with that VideoMemMaxUse settings, beacause I didn't change anything. I use the default settings. No problem at all.

My default for VideoMemMaxUse is 0, although I have a NVIDIA card with 2GB dedicated video memory. VideoMemFree is 1991, which sounds correct - it is usually a bit less than the actual value according to the WIKI pages. I tried to set VideoMemMaxUse to half of that, as suggested in the WIKI pages, but the videos stop playing after about the 5th track. If I set it to 0 or 1 or 16, it plays fine for hours, but in my mind it feels like VDJ is only using 0, 1 or 16 MB of the 2000MB available video memory and that is a total waste - why do I have to have a video card with so much memory if it is not used at all. Even worse, what negative impact does this extremely low setting have on video playback - would it consume more CPU, will it cause more HDD activity, will the video be more jerky, will video effects be more jerky etc. etc. etc.. Is there someone who can explain what the consequences will be of using such a low number for VideoMemMaxUse.
Thanks

Why changing settings when default settings work fine?
My video didn't play (well) when I had the Intel onboard as default video card. Not even one video played until the end.
Than I changed the default card to the Nvidia card with 2GB onboard memory and now I haven't got any problem as said before...
No matter what I do. And if my card says I don't use any video memory... Well that's fine by me! As long as it works, I'm satisfied!

I understand your point - if it works, leave it. All I want to achieve is to have the laptop optimized as far as possible. What is the use if you buy a Ferrari, but cannot go faster that 20MPH because there is a brick under the petrol pedal preventing you to accelerate - yes, sure, the Ferrari is moving, but not nearly as fast as it would when the obstruction is removed and it is optimized.....
Is there nobody that can explain the consequences of changing VideoMemMaxUse?
