So I got booked to do a all 90's party 1990-1999 Hip Hop(all Coast), R&B, Chicago House (Acid, Ghetto, Juke) and Reggae. I was wondering what you guys think will sound better, mixing all different years together or playing the songs by years. Since a song from '92 sounds different from a song from '99. And if I did it by years should I do all Genres by years ex. 6:00 playing '90-'95 Hip Hop and R&B then 7:00 90's Reggae then 8:00 '95-'99 Hip Hop and R&B. I have an idea of what I'll do just want to you guys opinion.

This is just me. I would have all the files that I might play, in a virtual folder ( I never use virtual folders), but would for this gig. I would also include some of the hot hits from the late 80's, and early 00. Then I would look at the crowd. For me there is not a specific order. I don't know if you were spinning then, but I was. It would just be a mix of music, not a specific time. No one is going to have a pen and pad, checking to see if your dates are out of sequence. Just read the crowd, they know why they are there.

Like AMAHM said, read your crowd. You can prepare all day, but it takes just one request to take you west, when you were going east. So have fun and give your crowd a great evening!

^^^+1

Also, I would ask the client, what I should do with request, that are out of the parameter. I love remixes, but stay away from the ones that don't sound anything like the original. Now I'm excited as if I was doing the gig.

90s hip hop and reggae would be a bomb residence gig! And I would also say play them in no particular order by year. Good luck

I do decade reviews quite often. As a matter of fact, my New Years eve was a review of the number 1 hits of 2013 in 4 different genres. My suggestion, use all the songs that hit number 1, in that decade, in all the different genres you are using. I think the crowd reacts better to songs they are familiar with, and this gives them that. As far as the beat, watch the crowd, and don't be afraid to mix it up, you've been asked to do this. Google Billboard. A little search will give you all the info you on song ratings. Happy New Year!

Thanks for the input guys I really appreciate it.
