It's almost back to the beginning.

On my Ipad I can move rapidly to different parts of a song in VDJ 8.
It's mapped as "NEEDLE_SEARCH".

It's basically this feature from the DDJ-SX..

Needle search
Needle search provides a touch strip for intuitive and fast searches.

This is interesting !

I need to go back to the original factory mapping with the mixer mode set to pc.

My son has my DJM-500 mixer. I bought it in 1999 and it still works perfectly. I used it for hundreds of gigs and it's built like a tank.

Not so sure the new Pioneer gear is the same quality but my DDJ-SX2 has been faultless so far.

Sorry for getting slightly off topic, but I guess the DJM-500 is very similair to 600 except for the easily replaceable faders, right?
I agree, these units are built like tanks. Works perfect and sound perfect!

Agreed they were really well built, but have to disagree on the sound quality especially when run into the red (as most DJ's did with these when they were the mainstay in most clubs) as they sounded horrible.

I've gone back to the factory mapping, and pc mixer. I've found that 2 of the 4 color FX work, they are pitch, and filter. Noise and crush are mapped to nothing. I love the Pioneer noise effect. It's a classic. Both the xdj-r1 hardware and ipad wifi mixer section, and transports seem to work fine with VDJ8.
The quantize feature on the ipad does nothing in VDJ 8. Loops and hot cues work.
The ipad effects half work with VDJ 8.
You cannot load laptop songs in VDJ 8 using the ipad.

Pioneer ipad control of vdj 8 may be one step too far. I'm confused. I want to take this unit to work, I've had it two weeks, and I barely understand what's going on. Maybe my first instinct, which was to simplify things, was correct. Ipad control of VDJ 8 is unnecessary. Extending this argument then maybe the ipad is unnecessary, I can use a flash drive and cd's without a ipad. VDJ 8 is essential, and the XDJ-R1 is a good controller.

I think I'd be better off with the vdj 8 remote app !

So what would you expect running the audio into clipping?

Exactly what I wrote :) They were popular back in the day because of the namesake but they weren't the best sounding mixer imho.... just my 2c ;)

Using the Pioneer app on an ipad, and the two track search buttons you can set a loop, one is loop in, the other loop out. These buttons are not needed for song positioning since there is a touch strip for this purpose.
I've gone back to the XDJ-R1 mixer and the default mapping which I now understand a little better.

I've just checked with VDJ tech support and there is little information on the XDJ-R1. This is all there appears to be.. http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/XDJ-R1.html . It is clear the XDJ-R1 is very poorly supported. This is probably because of the early bugs which needed many firmware updates to fix. I think it is now a stable media player/controller, but it may still be seen as a white elephant. With a little effort and some patience this unit can be a great asset to the mobile DJ. I suppose, as it stands not so many VDJ users would wish to encounter the problems. It is very much a dirty hands job examining, understanding, and modifying the mapping it to suit what is needed.

I've lost patience with Rekordbox, Remotebox, and the half a dozen apps that they had trampling through my firewall.
I'm using my ipad with the VDJ remote.
I don't want Pioneer controlling anything but the most basic functions.
All their messy control functions over VDJ 8 have been deleted.
They are just about fit to control loops.

I don't want the free Pioneer ipad app.
The VDJ mobile app is controlling VDJ 8 effects in a way I find satisfactory, and I have backup capabilities on my Akai Mini.
The Akai Mini is my main sampler controller providing 32 pads, the remaining pads and buttons control other functions.

I had a few more problems with the Pioneer software, and now I'm only prepared to let them have very limited access to any of my computers.

I now have a complete strategy which I can refine.
The XDJ-R1 is excellent in it's role as a hardware mixer providing some good effects, and enabling VDJ 8 transport complete with a few basic functions.
The Akai Mini is excellent controlling samples, hot cues, and loops.
As a backup system I have the usb flashdrive, and cd's.

I'm wasting no more time on Pioneer.

The full version of Rekordbox 4 is pretty new, give them a chance.

VirtualDJ 8 took god knows how long to get to a useable state.

Pioneers range of equipment is tiny compared to the hardware supported by Atomix.
They could have done a mapping, but no, they would rather force people to use Rekordbox.
They have left their customers struggling.
The XDJ-R1 is a remarkable piece of hardware.
It's simple to beat it into a formidable VDJ 8 supported controller, as well as being a great media player.

It's Atomix who decided not to do a proper mapping, Pioneer only supplies the needed midi codes or numbers. Pioneer or Hercules or any hardware company out their doesn't create the mapping its Atomix so your beef is with the wrong person or company.........

Glad you found something you like and works well for you though.

Perhaps I should apportion the blame more fairly. Atomix have done little to support this controller, the mapping is very difficult to comprehend, and comes without a guide. It might also not work very well, but I'll assume that was due to my lack of understanding.

I had two total controller freezes.
That was the end of the Pioneer ipad app and its wifi connection.
At this point I concluded that things had become too complicated.
My normal answer to such a situation is too simplify.

At last its been to work.
I deleted all the mappings related to Remotebox, and simplified the 4 (vdj 8) effect button mappings I couldn't understand.
My evening came to an early end due to the arrival of the police.
I only played for an hour and a half !
Anyway the XDJ-R1 was stable, and performed well.
The sound quality was boomy like a DDJ-SX I've used in the past.
I might have to get used to that.
My Denon's sound a little more refined.
On the downside I could not download songs from CU. I thought logging out, and then in again would help since I have another laptop which might have caused problems. It appears my Internet connection was very slow, and I was lucky to get back in. I tried another mobile phone but the result was the same. Of course the VDJ remote wouldn't work.
