Just a quickie, I already have a solution just wondering if this is the best way
I want to have a shift button on a launchpad2 that is seen by my controller [S4MK1]
[please note I've mapped everything with a SW shift on the S4] [loving the fact that vdj sees shift+command as a separate mapping entry]
I couldn't get to work until I changed from a shift command to a variable.
Is this the way it's done?

Shift is per controller if not mistaken. So SHIFT on Launchpad + Key on Traktor unit will probably not work as expected.
A workaround would be to create a custom definition for the Launchpad and have at the top <device> line devicetype="display". IIRC thats the only case where the SHIFT on the controller is enabled when a SHIFT is pressed from the "display" unit
Of course, there is always an option to use shift variable
