I'm interested in using SBDJ's Freestyler plugin to control my lighting. I can get the beat into Freestyler but the response of the two lights I've used so far has been poor. Writing and modifying the fixture files might be critical, however some lights might be better than others when controlled in this way. What kind of DMX lights work well in this kind of set up?

The two lights you've used? What are they? Make and model.

What exactly have you programmed into Freestyler to run when VDJ sends the tempo info?

I'm just messing around in my workroom. An ADJ Quad Gem DMX, and a QTX Light Colour Flash. Neither respond well to the beat. I had to create a fixture file for the latter. I'm just getting ready to try an Acme Mirrage but I need to write my own fixture file yet again.

I just selected the sound to light option for a single test fixture.
The Freestyler Sound 2 Light addon detects the track in VDJ and accurately calculates the beat.
I've got quite a bit of work to do learning Freestyler.

Hm ..nice Daylight skin you made, in fact it might turn out to be the basis of a really good normal skin.

In order to test S2L properly you need to program a SEQUENCE, load this sequence in a CUE LIST and from the CUE LIST to enable the speaker icon for that sequence so that the steps are done by S2L

Also when using SBDJ's plug-in (or ANY remote control solution that supports S2L) you should NOT use Freestyler's "internal" S2L facility.

Finally, keep in mind that when you program sequences the fixture properties can be set to FADE or SNAP mode. FADE is the default mode. In order to maximize the S2L effect you may want to change it to SNAP mode. Also on the sequence creator/editor window you may want to reduce the fade time to 100ms.
Not all fixture attributes work well with low fade times and/or snap mode...
Generally speaking you should never use low fades and SNAP mode on moving heads PAN & TILT attributes.

The best way to see S2L effect in action is to program an RGB fixture to change colors on beat in SNAP mode. This way the changes of the color are instant...

If you get a delay in response to the beat, this could be also related to the USB to DMX Interface. Which one are you using ?

Thanks for the tips Phantom.

@djdad It's just a cheap uDMX usb dongle and I got it from eBay.

I'm thinking about getting some new lights and this is part of my planning.
