Never update before a gig because if there's an issue than it will leave you scrambling. Only update if you have adequate time to test, check everything and to be able to roll back if there are problems.
Generally speaking, updates that are not Early Access ones are stable and tested so using them are usually fine. The nice thing about VDJ though is that if you do update to either an EA or Final, and you do have problems, you can easily roll back to the previous version you had before the update.
