Is there a way to use an external visual effects generator such as Luminant for when you are playing an audio only file?
I see that I can do a camera capture but that seems to only look for a camera. I wonder if there was a way to capture a window? Use case example: I have VDJ and the Luminant app running. When I am playing a video file, the video is output. When I play an audio file, VDJ would output the visualizer that Luminant is generating by capturing the window contents.

possibly. the audioonlyvisuals it already has are usually enough for most user's but just depends on how far down the rabbit hole you want to go.

Sure, you need something that does virtual cameras, like OBS
in obs dl the virtual camera patch
window capture your chosen window,
start the virtual cam configured to use the capture,
use vdj camera plugin to use the virtual cam

Alternatively there's NDI Screen Capture which you can then feed into VDJ.

Oh yeah I'm forgetting vdj screen grab has select window option too
