James Joseph Brown, Jr. (in seguito si fece togliere dal nome anagrafico il "Jr") nacque in una baracca nella campagna del South Carolina, anche se l'artista ebbe a dichiarare di essere nato a Macon (Georgia); crebbe ad Augusta, in Georgia, in condizioni di marcato disagio. Sopravvisse lavorando sin da bambino, come raccoglitore di cotone, come lustrascarpe e con le mance dei soldati neri di stanza in città. Fu infatti incaricato, non ancora decenne, di procurare clienti per il bordello a cui il padre lo diede in "affidamento" dopo che entrambi furono abbandonati dalla moglie e madre; cominciò ad esibirsi in qualche piccolo locale della zona, ma allo stesso tempo commettendo piccoli reati. A 16 anni fu arrestato per rapina a mano armata e fu recluso nel riformatorio di Toccoa. Qui conobbe Bobby Byrd (per molto tempo seconda voce del Padrino del Soul, sia sul palco che in studio), la cui famiglia aiutò quella di Brown ad ottenerne il rilascio sulla parola dopo solo tre anni di detenzione, a condizione che non tornasse ad Augusta o nella contea di Richmond.
Fece qualche passo nello sport, in particolare nella boxe e nel baseball, ma dovette ritirarsi dall'agonismo a causa di un incidente ad una gamba. Si dedicò allora alla musica.
In particolare, fin da piccolo si appassionò al Gospel (che ascoltò in chiesa), allo Swing ed al Rhythm & Blues.
Esordì alle fine degli anni Quaranta come interprete di gospel, destreggiandosi anche alla batteria, all'organo ed al pianoforte. Alla metà del decennio successivo fondò la sua prima band (firmando un contratto con una delle più celebri case discografiche dell'epoca, la King Records): i The flames che, alla fine del 1955, composero il loro primo pezzo, Please, please, please (vanta ben 40 dischi d'oro), che schizzò immediatamente nella hit parade americana. Seguirono due album e altri singoli come Night train, che ottennero tutti un ottimo successo.
Negli anni Sessanta Brown fu stabilmente in vetta alle classifiche dei dischi di rhythm & blues con brani come Prisoner of love, I got you, It's a man's world, Cold sweat e I'm black and I'm proud. Nel 1962 venne registrato un concerto tenuto all'Apollo Theater che darà vita all'album Live at the Apollo, diventato un best seller. Grazie alla sua popolarità riuscì a trasmettere messaggi sui temi sociali e esistenziali, come l'importanza dell'istruzione e la necessità di migliorare la propria condizione individuale e sociale (eclatante la sua battaglia, negli anni 2002-2003, a favore di Amina Lawal, donna nigeriana di 30 anni, condannata ad essere lapidata a morte per aver avuto una bambina fuori dal matrimonio). Seguirono altri grandi successi per Brown, tra i quali It's too funky in here e I got the feeling.
Gli anni Settanta lo videro ancora grande protagonista con ben otto album di successo: dopo una serie di dieci canzoni che lo proiettarono immancabilmente in classifica, James Brown venne consacrato come "The Godfather of Soul" e fu proclamato anche Re del R&B.
Negli anni Ottanta interpretò la parte del predicatore nel famoso The Blues Brothers (di John Landis, con John Belushi e Dan Aykroyd) recitando a fianco di altre stelle della musica come Aretha Franklin e Ray Charles; travolgente fu anche la sua esibizione con Living in America nel film Rocky IV (con Sylvester Stallone).
Negli anni successivi proseguì l'attività di concerti e incisioni, incoraggiando la rivalità tra Prince e Michael Jackson, da lui considerati suoi successori.
Grande la popolarità anche in Italia: la sua celeberrima "I Feel Good" ha ispirato "Iaffiu u cuttu", uno dei maggiori successi di Brigantony.
La morte
Nel dicembre del 2006 James Brown cominciò ad avvertire dei dolori fisici che lo portarono ad annullare varie date dei suoi concerti, anche se almeno fino al 23 dicembre era rimasta in piedi l'ipotesi di un suo ritorno sul palcoscenico per il 27 [1].
Il 24 dicembre, colto da un'acuta forma di polmonite, il "Padrino del Soul" venne ricoverato all'Emory Crawford Long Hospital di Atlanta, dove è improvvisamente deceduto ventiquattro ore dopo: il suo agente, Frank Copsidas, ha precisato che le cause della scomparsa sono ancora da appurare. L'artista aveva 73 anni.
