Well, it was my night off last night, so I went down to the club to try it out, seeing as there's nothing much going on there on a monday night. What can I say? Disappointing. The darn thing has no decent transmitter range - it's like trying to get a pair of bluetooth-enabled phones to connect with each other across a room. At one point, I was in direct line of sight of the USB dongle, about 4 metres away, and it still managed to lose contact. I've even had the dongle and console apart, and tried improving the internal antennas, but it didn't help.
It's a shame - I had such high hopes for this thing. I thought I'd be able to strip the guts out of it, and build it into a proper compact box complete with good quality faders and buttons, but it turns out that the RF circuitry is just too weak for the job. I was led to believe that it had headphone cueing, but alas, only from a standalone cue player within the software, which isn't even controllable via the unit! I'd even heard rumours that it might be bundled with an early version of VDJ, which might have meant there might be some potential to make it compatible with pro grade software, but it looks like that's not the case.
Oh well, worth a try I suppose! It's a great idea in theory, if only somebody could build a pro version of this: make it VDJ compatible, and give it the kind of range that you would expect from a radio mic, and I'm sure most of us wouldn't mind paying more for better build quality as well. A wireless Herc MK2 with a browser screen... now that would be worth having.
