Foolish Question

Would someone please tell me the answer to this i know this is dumb
On the bottom of the wave form right, there are those square blocks. I would asume that is the beat?
Why are some of the blocks thicker then others and some are skinnier then others, While beat mixing should we be trying to get the blocks skinny and thick to line up im guessing. Im new to vdj so please forgive me. Also what is this key lock thing and what does it do?

Thanks

Hi Auto,

The square blocks exactly what you described. They represent the beats in the song, I think its called something like CBG. The thicker boxes should line up with the initial down beat of the song. VDJ doesnt always align it correctly so you need to adjust it manually most times. The alignment of the boxes is only important if you plan on using the sync feature which is supposed to keep both decks mixing in time.

I don't use it personally because I think its cheating but I guess its useful if you don't like having to adjust the drift of some songs manually.

The key lock feature when enabled allows you to adjust the tempo of the song without changing the pitch. More or less the song won't sound like the chip munks when you speed it up. KEY = PITCH

Hope this helps...

Thanks l_rids I was wondering about the Key lock feature aswell, nice one

key lock does much more then that. Back in the early days of djing for me we would play every song pitched up 2% not only would the song play faster it would somehow sound brighter better etc. Keylock allows you to still do the 2% plus lock in that key then change the tempo as well. Locking in the key at 0 does the old master tempo but see what happens when you pitch up or down and lock that key in :) Pretty great feature if you ask me.

Now you are confusing me Cyder,

they way I read is the faster the music is played, the more the vocals should like chipmonks, the keylock stops this, is that right, sorry to be a simplyton.

In simple terms Keylock allows you to adjust the tempo at any given pitch. Doesn't always have to be 0. Say you like to speed up the song with normal pitch to create a certain effect (try 2%) its an old radio trick then enable the keylock to keep that pitch, then you can further adjust the tempo.

Great info for the New VDJ guy

Still a little hazing on the blocks, Should i be trying to line the skinny blocks and the thicker blocks together to mix? is that the goal. Sometimes it sounds right sometimes it doenst, thats why i was a little confused, Thanks for all the great info

Yes, thats the idea, but sometimes I've noticed that when I'm mixing the CBG don't always line up right. I may have it sync up in my headphones but the blocks ain't.

That's why I always go on what I can hear, not what I can see. I guess that's what come from spinnin vinyl for 10 years.

Your ears ARE the best for setting things up however. If set properly the CBGs (little blocks) once utilized properly are almost as good. Try looking under "Manual BPM Correction" in the VDJ user manual, page 30. Once properly configured most of the work is done for you, not all but most.
