Topic: Load/copy playlist songs into ram

Questo argomento è obsoleto e potrebbe contenere informazioni obsolete o errate.

I would like to see an option to load/copy songs put in the playlist (and maybe sidelist too) into ram.
My friend was djing with numark cue the other night and his external hard drive started to fail. My thinking is that if the file was copied to ram when dragged into the playlist then if it fails to copy to ram you would still have a few songs to play while disconnecting the hard drive and trying to cool it down.
I could also see this helping when a file has moved loction. If you load a file off a history list into the playlist it shows ok, but if the file has since been moved you dont get an error until you try to load it onto a deck.
Obviously not everyone has loads of ram, so I would like to see two options of something like Playlist ram = 512mb and Sidelist ram = 512mb (changeable by sliders?, default being 0mb?) Also a way of telling if a song was loaded to ram - loaded to ram column?, different icon?, italic text?

Loading complete files into RAM for later usage is just a bad idea IMHO. Generally speaking the OS tends to cuase fragments on the RAM plus it flushes info that it considers no longer usefull.
Also moving files between your drives/folders when you're performing is also a BAD idea. The only thing I can think of is to copy a few files on another drive (maybe a Temp folder) in order to "troubleshoot" your ext. hard drive. Right now VDJ allows you to perform file operations directly from it's main browser, but not from the sidelist or playlist.
Perhaps you should ask to enable file operation from these locations too.

Until then a work-around for you:
1. Save the playlist you have loaded
2. Go to "Playlists" on your browser and select the list you just saved. It's contents should appear on the main browser area.
3. Click on any track on the browser and hit CTRL+A on your keyboard. This should select all files.
4. Right click and select "File Operations" then "Copy to..." and copy the files on a different hard drive/folder
5. Browse to that folder and you can now disconnect your ext drive.

If you want to do the same on a sidelist you should do the same things but first you would have to use the "Switch_Sidelist_Playlist" command that as it says it switches the contents of the playlist area with those of the sidelist area.

PS: When you perform a "Copy to"/"Move to" command from within VDJ you can't create a new folder. You have to use one that allready exists.

PS2: If your HDD is dying and it can't read data properly neither "load to RAM" or "Copy files to" will work...
It's always better to have a bunch of files loaded on the system HDD and a second ext. HDD ready just-in-case...

PS3: It's not that I don't like your idea. It's that it's still very dangerous and tricky to make it work in order to solve the problem you mentioned. :)

PS4: I would agree with you in a function that colors tracks that are no longer in the place that VDJ expects them to be with a different color in the browser, e.g. RED. (Missing files) which should update dynamically.

He's got a new hard drive now, the old one keeps dying as he gets the files off, getting there though.
He doesn't move files during sets, its files played in previous weeks playlists that have been moved.
I had the idea because dos used to offer a ram drive and there's about 1gig of ram not in use, the main thing i'd want to see is virtul dj / cue check the file exists when dragged into the playlist.
Maybe just an 'analyse file when dragged to playlist/sidelist' option then?
File operation in the lists would be helpfull to check the file is there and to update bpm + key.
I'm gonna look at the switch sidelist playlist option as files get sent to the sidelist when not played - cheers!

I agree with this idea..
If vdj would just simply do a quick check to see if the file does exist on the drive, then surely this wont impact the performance of the software?
And maybe if this feature could be disabled some how just case it does cause performance issues..

I disagree with the idea..

a bunch of options or coding should NOT be added, to help compensate for the lack of backup equipment..
