Guys I got idea to prevent all shock's to externals, if you use flight case you can build external hdd in to the foam /sponge so they are well secured there trust me !

I will be looking into this as my next solution. Along with my current external that travels with me and my NAS for stationary backup.

It definitely works well for people who always use the same setup as you can build in the power supply and then just present a nice panel connector for the USB.

This is just like the Mac vs. PC setup... It's whatever works for you.
I do all of my music management on PC's, however only use Mac's when I'm playing live. I move my externals between my Mac and PC's constantly and VDJ shows no problems.
(I love the stability of OSX, however File Explorer (Windows) is tremendously better at file manager than Finder.)

both systems are very good, with their own strong/weak points. Never saw a difference in loading time between an external or internal drive USB3 when I load a song in VDJ. I'm not a wedding dj, and I'm happy with my 64 GB USB-stick, in 3 copy's. And that's all I carry with me, together with around 200 maxi's (2 sacs).

For those who are keen to take up digital dj'ing it is fairly easy.
I recommend VDJ, and a laptop which is above the required minimum specifications.
See link http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/Minimum%20system%20requirements.html
A 2ghz intel dual core is fine (karaoke yes, but not video), in conjunction with a minimum of 3Gb ram, not 2Gb, and a 500Gb (not SSD) HDD.
Vista will do, Win 7 is better.
It is best to create two partitions, one for windows, the other for data.
Store your songs in the data partition.
However it will work well even if you just put your songs in the normal My Documents Music folder.
Clone the HDD, and put it in a cheap external HDD case.
Use the laptop only for DJ purposes.
You now have an ultra cheap reliable system to use with an external HDD backup.
Complications reduce reliability, and are not needed.
The point is that you can now be a DJ without spending a load of money.
Good luck!

If this thread is a failure then it is because of poorly written comments like your's beatbreaker.

You're in the wrong forum beatbreaker, we use software, and controllers, not thumb-drives, and cdj's.
To avoid the poor quality information in this thread I recommend these threads from Digitaldjtips, Serato, and Traktor.

I use internal drives at gigs.
My Denon HS5500 media players both have internal drives. They're in a coffin case with a mixer, so it's completely self contained plug and play.
Put the case on the stand. Lid off, plug in single power cable and XLRs to speakers. Done!
The laptop also has my entire music library on the internal drive. This acts as my search facility and also as backup to my Denons.
I don't take any external drives to gigs as the system is its own backup. Three drives (Denon #1, Denon #2, laptop).
However, I do own multiple external drives for the purpose of backing up those backups. My music library is on at least 10 drives (other computers, external drives).

I don't want to get this thread to far off topic, so finding or creating a thread on computer setups would probably be better.
I was running full video on a P4/XP machine. It then became my backup when I got my current dual core 2.3 with the non-dedicated graphics. The dual core is still my main rig with another dual core as a backup.

2.3ghz core2 duo lappy runs video just fine for me.

No where in the "DJ Handbook" does it say externals are any worse off then internals, no where in any of those links does it say its better to use internals...... All of this and those links are OPINIONS.
As far as not using CDJ's, I do and a flash/thumb drive is just another form of an external drive so I don't see how im in the wrong forum?? Sometimes I load up a flash drive and that's ALL Ill bring (well headphones, needles and timecodes if needed)............ Rekordbox is a program and CDJ's can be used as controllers.
This thread like the others is full of OPINIONS, nothing here or there is fact!!

Do you actually read, and understand things?
Even this thread contains a lot of facts, those threads contain a vast number.
Opinions should be based on facts.
That does not apply to you, you conjure up opinion without regard to fact.
For instance it's a fact that an external USB drive is more vunerable to damage than a SATA drive built into a laptop.
It's your statements which contain no facts.
You're full of empty rhetoric.
I've hardly ever seen you make a worthwhile consructive post.
It was you who brought CDJ's, and thumbdrives into the debate without any justification.
What has VDJ got to do with those DJ's who use CDJ's, and thumbdrives?
Nothing.
You poison a debate about laptops, VDJ, and external HDD on the basis of this technology.
Young VDJ DJ's might replace you, your CDJ's, and thumbdrives before too long.
I hope I can help them.
These are typical of your comments

"You'll have to excuse Ron and his always putting down or trying to 1 up everything.
As for internal HD's being superior, that's BS because you can use the same drives for either, come on Ron, really??"
Not a fact in sight.
Rubbish comments.
You don't even use English properly.

FACTS IN THIS POOR THREAD
-Performance penalty is not an issue for DJ use. Even playback of full-hd video requires less than 1/10th the practical bandwidth that USB 2.0 can provide.
-The USB specification is quite clear on power use, and power distribution in modern computers is quite good, with some even able to provide up to 1A on each port for charging purposes. The 500mA the USB 2.0 spec requires should not be a problem
I could go on with this forever.
You're not worth my time beatbreaker.

Unfortunately this thread seems to be going down the spiral.
My view is this. If your not a bedroom DJ, all of your hadrives are "external" to some degree.
I don't know of a currently sold PC that has less then USB 2.0
We seem to all agree that the software we are here to discuss is not performance impacted at those speeds or higher.
A large majority of us do not have our PC's or Harddrives mounted in a rack or cases.
So, laptops or externals get into the same risks with theft, damage, etc. really a laptop is a big external drive case. While there is an extra cable between them, they have the same risk level.
There is a reason I have both. It's the solution I feel works best to meet my goals. Hopefully, people trying to meet the same goals find value in mine or other information.
Also, hopefully, we can stop bashing other ideas and trying to draw lines. Let's get the thread back on topic or close it and let it sink.
