Here are the tests. They give a good view on the impact of zeroDB. Autogain was activated and both channel trim/gain knobs were at 12 o'clock. This time I also applied my usual transition steps using EQ, so no peak during transition noticeable.
As from zeroDB -6, the channel VU showed 1 green led. At -3 it was topping green and peaking at 1 orange led.
at standard zeroDB it was peaking red.
So, as a conclusion: I will keep Autogain ON. Set zeroDB to -6 or -9. And trust VDJ on this without worrying about the DDJ-1000 channel VU-meters, right?
Would still be nice when VDJ shows some VU visuals at -9. But, then again, why should you matter when Autogain is ON?
