I've been using VDJ for about 6 months now with a Hercules Mk2 mixer, and I just bought some turntables and a traditional mixer in order to use timecoded vinyl. I'm absolutely lost though with regards to setting it up.
I want to be able to switch between timecoded and regular vinyl without having to unplug any leads, however due to the fact I'm using a laptop with only one soundcard, and an Mk2 mixer with a build in soundcard, is this possible? If so, could somebody give me instructions on how, or point me in the direction of a help page or topic.
Thanks a lot, I can't wait to get going with TCV!

What I was after is physically what cables will I need, and what do I plug into where? I really don't know where to begin, as even the thought of being able to control what's going on on my PC with an analog Vinyl boggles my mind. Are there any helpful diagrams?

And sorry to double-post, but is there anywhere I can get timecoded vinyl from in the UK so I don't have to wait 10 days before I can start using my decks?
And, is it possible to record mixes made with regular vinyl onto MP3 with this sort of set-up?

its all in the guide for you there
but to sum up
each line represents a dual phono to dual phono cable
is what you need you can record real vinyl by using the input select buttons
and choosing mixed mode in the 3.4 config

Thanks, that's perfect! And sorry to bombard you with questions, but any word on timecoded vinyl in the UK?
Inviato Fri 15 Jun 07 @ 12:02 am
You need VDJ Professional to use Timecoded Vinyl for longer than 5 minutes! I did order from the shop before to the UK (received warped vinyl, hopefully it is better now) but I believe that Numark Virtual Vinyl records should be compatibile - although I don't know where to buy these from?! SSL and FinalScratch replacements are easy to find..

So all TCV is the same, it's not software specific?
Inviato Fri 15 Jun 07 @ 1:12 am
I worded that badly, sorry. They are specific - it's just odd that Numark aren't distibuting their TCV to buy as standalone.. SSL vinyl works with VDJ however (with limited ability), although I don't use it so am unsure what limited actually means.

Oh god, I just ordered two RANE's

You can easily cancel, you shouldn't be charged until the items are despatched anyway. The CV02 vinyl will work, you just won't be able to needle drop.
Inviato Fri 15 Jun 07 @ 1:51 am
I'm not up on the lingo, what's CV02, and erm, needle dropping :$
Inviato Fri 15 Jun 07 @ 2:01 am
CV02 (as far as I know) is the name for Rane Serato Scratch Live vinyl. Needle dropping is when you put the needle of the turntable on any part of the vinyl and the software will know the exact position. So with the Numark/Virtual DJ vinyl you are able to put the needle for example 2 minutes into the vinyl and that's where the song will play from. A lot of people don't like (use) this behaviour anyway, personally I do. I believe that when using the CV02 vinyl no matter where you position the needle, the track will resume from wherever it last played from previously.

Ahh that's fine for now, I can see how I get along without the needle-dropping and then get some VDJ ones if I find I'd like the feature, i just don't want to wait 10 days to start being able to use any of my set-up at all.

Hopefully you'll get it all working ok. The Mk2 is a resonable soundcard for the price, you can get it to 2ms latency with some settings adjustment (10 is the default in VDJ). I find it works best with 4ms latency at 48khz (in the Mk2 control panel) and 5ms in VDJ's performance settings. This is with VDJ's performance slider set to 2/4. If you make the latency worse (i.e. higher) you can improve the settings but it all depends on how happy you are with the sound I suppose.

to get best results remeber u still need that serial to get 3.4
aslo on my blog is a guide to reduce the mk2 latency to 1ms which comes in handy

Would Virtual DJ being able to use WDM drivers for the Mk2 eliminate needing Asio4All reducing system resource requirements in total and allowing Safe Mode to do a better job eliminating hisses and pops? Is there a way to do that? I thought there was but then realised that Virtual DJ actually just forces the Mk2 into ASIO with 10ms latency unless you explicitly force it to be something else.
Inviato Fri 15 Jun 07 @ 4:51 pm
asio should be higher quality
its impossible to use tcv in wmd mode aslo
