Hi all,
Just want to see what people think, do you reckon the new ASUS Eee PC could run VDJ with a TCV setup?
http://www.hardwarezone.com.au/firstlooks/view.php?cid=9&id=9497
I run VV and i am looking for the smallest lightest solution possible for gigs.
You can upgrade it with 2 gig of ram and a 16 gig sd card, and it can run XP.
However the processor is only a 900mhz Pentium M - pretty slow.
I don't do video so that is not an issue. How much of an impact does the cpu have on sound quality?
cheers

I run a 1.2Ghz Pentium M Panasonic Toughbook and the power of that is fine to run VV with a firewire PC card and ASIO firewire soundcard as well as midi controllers. Not sure about 900mhz but its not too far off my setup, if thats anything to go by.

The minimum requirement to run Virtual DJ is:
PIII 850 MhZ computer
1024x768 SVGA video
DirectX compatible soundcard
512 MB RAM
20 MB free on the hard-drive
The recommended configuration is:
PIV 3 GhZ computer
1024x768 SVGA video
4.1 DirectX compatible soundcard (with front and rear separate outputs)
1024 MB RAM
200 MB free on the hard-drive
*** Remember. Pentium M's clock speeds are not directly comparable to standard Pentium 4 Clock speeds.
A 1.6 GHz Pentium M can typically attain the performance of a 2.4 GHz Pentium 4-M **

This isnt very suitable for music software, its a good little machine for browsing the web , but the screen for starters is to small to run VDJ well
and the spec is ultimately low.

Go away from Pentium M !
I have 2GHz and 1 Gig RAM (ddr 400) and my system need 15 sec. to to load a song ! The machine is too slow. It functions, but it is too slow.
All my Settings in Performance are in the middle without Mastertempo. No Problems all the time (v5.0.6) but the system is too slow.
btw. it is a Celeron CPU inside !! That is still worse!
I´m sorry :o /

Hmm I just read that the chips are actually underclocked to 600 mhz as well so I guess its a no then.
Bugger, they looked so good for the price!

It's basically a PDA on steroids.
nice small and for basic web browsing on the go.

You'd better take a tablet pc, so that you can also control the skin by your finger (or someone else's eheheh) ;-)

Yeh except that I'll have a hard time explaining the new 2k+ purchase to the girlfriend ;)

You own a business (dj) right?? Tell her it is a tax write off.

I've used an EeePC before. Unless you have the 8GB version of, it's pretty challenging to get a full installation of Windows XP on there. Obviously, you'd be stuck using a portable external hard drive of some sort to store your music, unless you can maybe get enough music to get by on an SDHC card or something.
I contemplated trying virtualDJ on there, but the screen is only 800x480. Perhaps you could still make it run though, because you can set the desktop size to 800x600, and then you've got to scroll up and down. VDJ used to support 800x600 skins, and there are some available.
I think it'd run a little slow, as it's only a 600MHz Celeron (an underclocked 900, actually) but one could probably make it work for a little emergency backup system or something of the sort. There are three external USB ports, so you have enough for a mouse or keyboard or controller, external hard drive, and USB audio interface. The built in keyboard is so tiny that you'd have a hell of a time doing typing on it in the dark, in a hurry, and probably, you won't want to try any kind of fancy beatmixing with that keyboard (which is all I usually use).
I'd say wait until the next generation of the EeePC (or something similar) comes out, and they'll probably have a more reasonably useful screen resolution. Also, they'll very soon be releasing a version that runs Windows XP, but personally I'd not recommend running windows with a 4GB Solid State Disk - go for the 8GB version, since memory prices are dropping so fast.

Yeh I was looking at the 8 gig version with a 16 gig SD card. There is a few articles over at http://www.eeeuser.com/ where they talk about how to overclock to 900mhz and they've got some drivers for a higher rez (I think it can do 1024x600).
I'm still worried about the processor though. There is rumour that the next generation of Eee's will have Core2 Duo variants but I'd rather not wait if I don't have to ;)
I'm not too worried about the keyboard, this machine would be dedicated for my TCV setup so all it needs is 1 usb and Function keys which it does.
Such a shame the processor is so weak otherwise this would be the perfect TCV machine i reckon. Then again i'd still like to give the current model a go to be sure, just need to borrow one :P

What!!!!!!!! You are shitting me, right. Would you have to explain a 2k necklace, if you bought it home? Man Up. Does she ask your permission every time she buys a pair of shoes? Even if she did, "I didn't think I had to ask for your permission, to make a business decision", is my answer.

i have a dell xps 1330, yes i've had a shitty time getting it running properly but i think thats do to vista mostly, now that it's working...it's the craziest , fastest tiny laptop ive had and i have no lag what so ever .not even with super good quality file and it's from an external hardd rive..so as far as power and portability...it's a great choice...the only issue with it is that it toke a whyle to get it working and i'm not sure what i did to get it going..so thats never a good thing...but it's a realy affordable laptop "kinda" and it's less then 4 pounds for sure, it weighss nothing ...very small
