I'm running my XP2500+ Barton at 3200+ speeds, but I'm using a special thermal compound and expensive cooling combination, the Barton's are known for how well they can be overclocked. Is the powersupply in your CUBE style computer powerful enough for your 6600GT? How many watts is it?

Inviato Tue 24 Jan 06 @ 10:49 pm
it comes with the case.. can't replace it... the case is the X-Qpack with a 450 watt power supply...
If you look at Cyder's blog ... he has one too. I love the case, there is plenty of room and cooling.
I did however find a Silverstone case that allows you to put any full ATX power supply in it. It is also a cube style case for a Micro-ATX motherboard.

So you think it maybe my power supply?

I am also running 3 hard drives too (3* 250 gig ATA)
What if I switch over to SATA drives... I heard that doesn't use as much power... I may be wrong though...

A 450w PSU should be just fine, the 6600GT generally needs about 350 to operate. The only thing I can think of is to check your BIOS settings, although I don't know what would cause such a performence issue to be honest sorry :(

I have tinkered with the BIOS for a little bit... with no luck... I am little unclear on some the settings and not sure what would be optimum.

Al,

I wish I had more ideas for you, but I can't think of anything else. I know that an Athlon64 does wonders for a system running videos (thats what Im using), but the stuff you have should at least run them without studdering at all. For a minute there I was going to say that maybe your PSU was the problem, but 450 watt is plenty. Sorry I cant help you more. Let us know if you decide to get the new system and I will try to help with any issues you may run into. Or if you decide to keep trying with yours, maybe someone here can come up with something we didnt think of.

thanks for the responses...

I think I may try to salvage what I can from my existing mobile system and make a newer video mixing system.

I found the following on NewEgg...

motherboard:
$56.00
ABIT SG 80
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813127201

CPU:
$180.00
Intel Pentium 4 630 Prescott 800MHz FSB 2MB L2 Cache 3GHZ
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116198

RAM:
$121.94
OCZ Platinum Series 1GB DDR 400 (PC 3200)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227209

This way I can use my existing hard drives and new video card I bought (6600GT AGP) and case.

I will only spend like $369.59 with shipping.

I just was trying my best to avoid that for now but looks as if I have no choice if I want to have a system solid enough for video mixing.

thank again everyone for your input.

low-fat-al,

Don't buy a SiS based motherboard. a 945 is a better chipset:

If you want a cheap one better get this one: ($ 76)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813135208

But if you could, this is what I recommend you for $125 or $115 (worth it)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813121288
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813121283

Or if you want an ASUS:($101.50)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131545

1GB RAM in DDR2 667 (PC5400) OCZ at $80.64
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227059
or a DDR2 533 (PC4200) OCZ at $ 62.64
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227006

Good Luck!

You will spend $385.64 with my top recomendations (really worth it), or as low as $338.64. You could spend the same and get a 640 for $217 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116197

Hope it helps you. I really recomend the Intel motherboard (3 years warranty) and the DDR2 667 memory modules.

I appreciate the suggested products..

you are missing my point though...

In order for this to be affordable I am salvaging parts of my existing machine.
I recently bought an AGP video card and I have a case that supports Micro-ATX size motherboards.
I have to go by those two factors to buy new stuff.
I don't mind a new processor, RAM and motherboard...
anything more than that I can't afford for a while.

So you are saying stay away from SIS motherboards? What is a recommended chipset then?

I write it before, my recommended Intel chipset is D945 or above (955 or 975). My recommended motherboard, it cames in ATX or mATX (955 or 975 only in ATX or BTX). But you cannot use AGP in these new boards :s Maybe you could change the Video card for a PCI-e in the place where you bought it... If you couldn't well you will spend more money in the wrong place... there only a few that support AGP

I love the input you are giving... very useful info.
I am not sure if NewEgg would let me return my video card I have had for about 3 weeks now trying to get this going on my current system. I paid like $142 w/ shipping for it. E-VGA 6600gt 128 mb ... good card for the price I paid. Wouldn't mind keeping it and spending less on this whole project if I can get away with it.

Al,

I would recomend an Athlon64 cpu and mb if you can. I believe you will be able to get better or equal speed for less money. Also, contact newegg and tell them you made a mistake and got the wrong video card type. Just say that you just hadn't installed it yet but found out now. They might just charge you a restocking fee. I can tell you that the Lanparty athlon64 mb's are the shishnit. Great boards. Check them out as an option if you are able to exange your video card.

Definitely get a matched pair of whatever ram you decide to get. OCZ does make some really good ram. Just make sure you get a good model. Check the reviews on Newegg and see how overclockable the one you are looking at is. That is something I do to get an idea of how stable it will be even though you wont be overclocking. Also consider that many new MB's require a power supplyl with different connections. Take a good look at the MB and at your power supply to see if it will work.

acw, remember that low-fat-al requires a Micro ATX motherboard. newegg sell only 7 different 945G motherboards which are to this form factor and none support AGP.

before I purchase anything major...

I want to try one more thing with my problem.

Last night I was working at a club using my mobile system.
I mainly use PCDJ FX with my DAC-3. I am in transition to use VDJ if I could get the video mixing to work correctly. Well last week when I worked there my PCDJ actually had what I would call a digital skip. I would start a song and seconds later it would pause for a second and resume... happened A LOT!! Since then I reformatted and re-installed and tweaked the OS and installed programs.. VDJ and PCDJ FX. It happened again last night as well. This is my second week to use my mobile system in a long time to play a gig. I work weekends at a nightclub were they have thier own built in system. I am actually starting to think it is possibly a memory issue. I want to buy new GOOD memory and see if the "digital skip" will be present in PCDJ and of course test the video mixing in VDJ. Next step if that doesn't do it... I am going to swap CPU's from another computer. I have a AMD Athlon XP 2400+ in main home workstation computer. I want to not really spend any mass amounts of money if I can get away with it. I will at the same time plan out a new system that I can invest in here in the near future (1 to 2 weeks or so). I would love to salvage my existing AGP card and not really go through the hassle of contacting NewEGG and trying to return it minus restocking fees... waiting for them to recieve it from me... and THEN ordering a new system and having to purchase a new video card that will cost most likely $200 to $350.

Prime95 (Torture Test) is a recommended program to test the stability of your system, specifically the CPU. Memtest86 (DOS app which requires a floppy) is a good program to diagnose and memory problems which you may have. It may well be worth running Memtest86 overnight to verify that your RAM is ok if you have concerns.

Inviato Thu 26 Jan 06 @ 9:02 pm
what if I don't have a floppy drive... will it work on an external USB device or CD-R? and overnight.. how long of a test is it?

Inviato Thu 26 Jan 06 @ 9:03 pm
I'm sure you can get a cd-r version, but don't attempt a harddrive / usb pen device install as it will render it useless. The test lasts an infinite amount of time but overnight (10pm - 6am for example) should be a fair amount of time to let the test run.

Here's the ISO image for cd-r burning:

thanks... I will give it a try tonight while I am at work using the club's system!!

memtest 86 is the best memory tester. prime will test better the whole datasytem integrity.. try looking at the system logs at the time when the glitches happen (look at the system clock shortly after they happen and write it down) this is often the easiest way to find out what a problem is being caused by.

Inviato Fri 27 Jan 06 @ 2:14 am
I didn't do the memory test yet... one thing I experimented with was taking each memory stick out and then swaping them while testing my system. I found that my "digital skip" happened both times... so I think I have eliminated my memory being bad. I however found that the music I played while the "digital skip" happened was on the second partition of my drive that has my OS on. ... so I am thinking I have a problematic drive. Maybe some bad clusters or something. I am in the middle of backing everything up on a spare drive and I am going to test the same senario with different drives. If I still get the "skip" then I go to the next thing.. my CPU, motherboard, etc... I am pretty confident that it is the hard drive. If that is the case then I am thinking of buying two SATA drives. One being the Raptor 36 gig and the other being the new WD Raid Edition 400 gig. Found both on zipzoomfly.com really cheap...
