I'm not gonna disagree. A lot of the things stated make sense. But how complicated do you want to make things?

:-)
I think we are just looking at things differently.

If a person needs to be constantly adjusting and controller their lightshow, then a second computer (and screen and controller etc) is the smarter way to go.. (so I agree, flipping between windows and software is not ideal)

myself, I would rather have a light show preprogrammed, and let it do its thing.. IE: no flipping of software, no looking at two screens..
When I press play for the song, the lightshow responds accordingly..
again, PLAYING a DMX "cue" or "show" or "scene", does NOT require a lot of overhead nor a dedicated GUI or controller

As to "fixture files" etc, I also agree.. VDJ can't (and won't) just jump in their and be a full fledged DMX PROGRAMMING tool..
but again... I would like to see more integration between the two, and maybe even someday the ability to PLAY THOSE PREPROGRAMMED SHOWS..
Yes, sending signals to the DMX software is pretty much do-able now.. but its still limited on what you can do, and the other problem is you are still running another software package or even another computer..

You are also assuming that EVERYONE needs to program and run a complicated lightshow.. (I pretty much use a whole DMX universe (512 channes) for my "big show" so I know where your coming from), but in MOST cases, many DJ's are just running a few DMX effects.. For those DJ's something like freestyler is actually overkill!
IE: when I run just my four colorchangers I always just use my simple chauvet controller.. it does the job just as well..

soooo..
for now...
what I would like to see one day is for it to just start small.. basically be able to act as a simple DMX 'step' controller (no fixture files, no "patching") just the ability to run simple DMX steps.
then
maybe see better integration between existing lighting software (Sunlite, Freestyler, etc)
then
maybe have the ability to actually "play" those same shows from within VDJ.

Hippydog hit the nail right on the head for me at least simplify my setup trigger the built in programs already resident in the light fixtures have them move / synchronize pairs to a common beat etc. and I am happy. If this can be done for up to eight lights I'm good to go.

No extra computer no Freestyler .. I'm good to go.

I think it would be more important to get a real MIDI Clock (Master/Slave) option to sync the lights to the music.

Hi @all midiclock is all what i need. I use Cuelux on my Mac and VDJ & Cuelux works together fine on one Macbook. But i don´t know how i get the midi signal to cuelux with mac. Anybody know that?

Scott,

Have you posted this test program anywhere for us to try?

Not yet; I'll make it available in the near future.

@SBDJ: Maybe this will help you. It's a small program that translates OSC to MIDI in VDJ. Unfortunately the site is in German. The link to the program is somewhere in the middle (OSC to MIDI.zip)
Looks like you don't have to re-invent the wheel :)

No need; I'm not using OSC for this. It controls FS directly.

Sorry I missed the discussion in plugins. I am very keen for this.

You cant send midi thats why the plugin would be very useful.

BU-HUMP!!! any news of this plugin for vdj 7?

It's pretty much finished and is just undergoing some testing before release.

that's the best news I have heard since the release of VDJ 7! cant wait to try it out! does it run well on the same machine as VDJ or do you think I should start saving for a new lappy and have a dedicated pc for each application? right now I am running freestyler and VDJ on the same machine with an enttec open, but it does chew up a fair bit of the cpu, I will probably get the pro which should save the cpu just not sure, any advice...

Cheers

Andrew

I use both applications fine on my machine. If you're struggling now it might be worth looking into why - whats using your CPU power?

I think its the enttec open, plus all the controllers hooked up, It doesn't max out, just bounces around the 40% to 50% mark, I think if I get the Pro with a built in processor that will free up some more RAM for VDJ to use, as I am going to get a couple of xone 1d's for the extra decks.

I forgot.. where you able to find a way to somehow integrate the cues of VDJ with FS?

I was indeed ;)

So, I could have cue points 10-20 ready in my songs as lighting cue points, and (for example) I could have it so that when bon jovi sings "we'll give it a shot..." it goes pitch black, and then when he sings "ooooooooooh, livin' on a prraaaaayer" all my lights can strobe, and then go back to sound active for the rest of the chorus (just the first example that came to my head- i do love a bit of bon-jovi!)

If that's what we're talking about then that is awesome!

You've got it ;)

Effectively you program your sequences, scenes and what have you in Freestyler, then use cue points to tell VDJ to trigger things within FS. All the time you can also pass the CBG grid as a S2L trigger.

I just got a little wet my pants... cant wait, this will do everything I need, your amazing sbdj I feel like I should give you some cash

Please excuse my ignorance of this subject, but I had noticed these verbs in VDJScript, whilst mapping a controller...

dmx : show/hide the lights control window

dmx_color : set the color program

dmx_chase : set the chase program

dmx_black : black all lights

dmx_strobe : activate/deactivate the strobe

dmx_flash : flash all lights

dmx_setvalue : Set an individual dmx value. first parameter is channel, second is value
