I'm not looking to control the software with a mixer. I have a Hercules mp3 e2 console for that. I was just going to get a soundcard but it seems that a mixer like the M1 would give me a bit more freedom as far as using my headphones to cue up the songs.
My question is:
Does using a device like this (one that has a sound card built in) fee up resources in a computer? The reason I ask is that I play music videos and my computer is working really hard to keep up with the demands of doing this.

Thanks for your help

If you've got the hercules, then you could get away with just buying a soundcard the "Audio 2 DJ" by native instruments is ideal as it's just got one output for the speakers and one output for your headphones so you can cue up your tracks. And it quality sound for the same price as a budget mixer.

The numark M1 usb is also fine because it has the soundcard built in, and it means that you can plug other things into it, like an ipod if you do a gig and your computer crashes or something.

My feeling is that you'll be buying a much better building block for your system if you get the NI Audio 2 because it's pro quality and if you decide you want a hardware mixer later, you can plug it into that too. You'll get lower latency (faster response from the software) and better quality sound.

But if you want to be a mobile DJ and want to start gigging ASAP then the numark M1 usb is the way to go. It's got inputs so you can play an ipod if you need to or whatever, and it's got a mic input which will come in handy.

Thanks for the input. I have 2 Numark Axis 9s that I play cds thru a Numark M2. I like the idea of the soundcard much better now after your input. I would simply feed the sound to one of my aux channels. I was unaware about latency issues and such since I'm new to computer djing. I will research the sound card idea further. Thanks so much for all the info.

I bought the M1USB and plugged it in to my comp but only one channel works. It's really weird cause when it's straight plugged into the comp using the usb cables, vdj only emits sound when using the integrated sound card but when I did a little rigging, using my stereo's rca jacks and hooking it up to the master rca output behind the mixer, only one channel plays any sound using "USB Audio Codec." Channel 2 is more or less dead, no sound, vdj recognizes the "USB Audio Codec", both codecs, but no sound. Anybody have any suggestions regarding that. I don't really want to have to rig it just so I can play on one channel, that really sucks. lol

Firstly, what version of VDJ are you using? If it is the demo I'm not sure that this supports multiple sound cards (I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong). If its a cracked version it may just not be working properly.

Secondly, how have you connected the mixer to your computer? You need to use 2 USB cables, one to USB 1 and one to USB 2.

In the sound settings you set the output to 'External Mixer', then the sound cards will either show the M1USB mixer or USB Codec and USB Codec (2).

This is from memory so may not be 100% but is along the right lines.

No, this is not possible - The M1USB does not have the required inputs to be able to use timecode. The sound cards of the Numark M1USB are intended for mouse/keyboard mixing or for use with a MIDI controller such as Numark DMC-2 that does not have its own built-in sound card.

You can control VirtualDJ with tradtional vinyl decks or non-MIDI capable CD players by using timecode. To use this, you will need the following:

* VirtualDJ Professional: http://www.virtualdj.com/buy/index.html (VirtualDJ Home FREE allows timecode to be tried out for the first 10 minutes of use: http://www.virtualdj.com/download/free.html )

* A suitable ASIO sound card with atleast 4 inputs and 4 outputs, such as Hercules DJ Trim, Native Instruments Audio 4 or 8 DJ or ESI Maya44 USB.

* Timecode vinyl records or timecode CD's ( http://www.virtualdj.com/products/timecode/cd.html )

NOTE: Your computer needs to meet and preferably exceed the recommended specification on the following page: http://www.virtualdj.com/products/virtualdj/index.html

The rane sixty-one should do the job its a digital midi mixer and sound card... also ive heard the ttm57sl could do it but you would have to hack the firmware
