Topic: Scare stories with usb devices

Just been doing some research on ye old tinternet and am worried of scare stories relating to using too many usb devices on windows.
Would the following be affected on perfomance/crashing?
1. Laptop using 1.7ghz onward core 2 duo/3 gig ram/
2. usb audio device eg. m audio fast track pro
3. usb controller eg vestax vci 100
4. usb 2.0 ports
anyone?? cheers

if you connect those devices to a powered hub you will be alright .....in other words a usb hub that you plug in to the ac outlet

i use one that has the laptop cooler built in , so i get a cooler and a 4 port hub
 
Thanks for advice, but surely the powered hub is using all it's resources from the one usb it is pluged into? So is it not better to use 2 seperate usb sockets built into the laptop?
 
Talk about scares. Friday i was preparing playlist when vista flashed up that one of my double 1TB harddrives needed formatting followed shortly after by the same message referring to my second drive. They are both in a double USB caddie, one backing up the other, needless to say, panic was setting in. I know this can happen with XP but Vista supposed to have solved this issue. Eventually they worked fine, however it shocks you into realising how easy it can be to lose 5 years of work in an instant and how important it is to have alternative backups.

When things are running sweet we tend to get to confident with the hardware, however, preparation for failures is a must, although an obvious statement to make but surprising how many of us think we have done enough to protect against such occurrences.
 
like i said already if the hub has it's own power supply ........it's not getting powered by the laptop it's connected to , it's just adding ports
 
Nice one I get the power aspect, but will the data transfer be slower if both devices are connected to two ports connected into the one usb?

Powered hubs are a must. Secondly, the more usbs that are used the bigger the drain on the cpu and the bandwidth of the usb ports.
 
I had an internal heat issue with my USB ports about a year ago caused I believe by too many components drawing power from the laptop. The effect was the laptop breaking down after 3 hours or so and even shut down 2 or 3 times.

I had;
1. External USB hard drive (mains powered)
2. Native Instruments AK1 Soundcard (USB powered)
3. Cooling plate (powered from USB) with 2 extra USB 1.1 ports,
-3a. PC to TV convertor (USB powered)
-3b. USB mouse (USB powered)
4. Vestax VCI-100 (mains powered)

I've had to change my strategy on using USB ports.
My current setup is;
1. External USB hard drive (mains powered)
2. Native Instruments AK1 Soundcard (USB powered)
3. USB 2.0 powered 7 Port Hub
-3a. Cooling plate (USB powered)
-3b. PC to TV convertor (USB powered)
-3c. USB mouse (USB powered)
-3d. External Video Camera (USB powered)
4. Vestax VCI-100 (mains powered)

As can be seen from this new strategy only the soundcard is drawing power from the laptop. I've had no more heat issues with the laptop in the last year since switching to this strategy. I've found that my Vestax VCI-100 will only work when it is connected directly to the laptop, it refuses to work through the Hub, not a problem. I also found that it works badly when USB powered and is definately better mains powered.
 
a cooler drawing power off the laptop is just making things worse ..... my soundcard and external hd and cooler are all "mains powered" as you said .....only my wireless mouse is drawing power off the laptop .. you should plug your cooler into the 7 port hub plug the mouse into the lappy instead ......

Errrrrrrmmmmmmm, it is!!!

3a,b,c & d are plugged into the ports on the 7 port hub. Thought I made that as obvious as I could.
 
Soulman, If I am not mistaken you do primarily video. What make, model and specs is your laptop and how do like like working video with the VCI-100 and how are you crossfading video fromt he VCI-100?
