Topic: Who names music genres?

Questo argomento è obsoleto e potrebbe contenere informazioni obsolete o errate.

I have been asked by my coousin to Dj at his bar for a night for his girlfriends 21st. No problem there. When I ask what music he wants I get told indie rock and dirty electro. ah problem...I know what the first 2 are....now what on earth is dirty electro?

Without wishing to sound un-cool to a 21 year old whose nappies I used to change, obviously I just said yeah no problems.

was life not easier when all that existed was house, funky house, trance, hard house, garage and RnB?

now we have elctro, dirty electro, grime etc etc.

Its great that music progresses really it is, but stop naming it so badly....give us older ones a clue.

If anyone can help me dechypher what "dirty electro" is please do.

I'm off to tinker with my plants in my potting shed

I agree. There are so many genres I don't think most people would notice it now a days because they don't even know what it is anymore.

Even that was complicated...It used to be black, white & gay (r&b, rock, disco)....and r&b begat funk and rock begat new wave and disco begat synthpop.........

If you wrote a family tree of music genres begetting now you would need an entire forest (and a lot more rupies!).

I once saw an ad on craigslist looking for a Dj that played "low tempo new age ethnic rhythmic buddha lounge house", now THAT is a genre!

If your ever trying to search for something thats more than one word just use google and put the search in quotes. EG "dirty electro"

Came up with a few good references on the very first page, one of which is http://dirtyelectro.com/

I know nothing about dirty electro but that search should at least give you some ideas about songs you need to get

i got the job, but they sacked me after three nights.... i kept falling asleep.

Tayla

you should be on T.V.

just hope you dont sweat as much as Lee Evans

wuz that music boring sounds like it LOUNGE HOUSE OJK!!!!!!

@devdev, wherever there's a drought they just send Lee Evans and put him on stage...

its all music, as long as it sounds good it gets a spin

I now know what it is.

its shit

what gets me is when progressive is placed before the name of genre, progressive rock, progressive house, etc. I always expected music to PROGRESS, now if im excused, i shall progress to the next song as i am doing some progressive mixing in this club who's owners wish there is some progress in revenue...

Dirty electro is house music with that big wobbly bass sound like Benny Benassi, Potbelleez, Fedde Le Grand.

I love that stuff.

I would class this as dirty electro. There's probably more "dirty" beats around, but that's along the right kind of lines I think.

Have a listen to Annie Mac's Mashup on BBC Radio 1. They play some dirty electro on there as well as some drum'n'bass, etc. (and there's always playlists on the website so you can find any tunes you like the sound of)

Oh yeah, and since it's a 21st birthday, I bet you could play some of this stuff to warm up with, but there's a good chance that when they get on the dancefloor they'll want the usual chart stuff and "nothing but the hits". :-)

Rock did NOT begat New Wave. Disco begat New Wave, Synthpop and House. Rock begat Alternative.

That all sound like hard house to me (just a bit moderned up for this decade)

I suppose it depends on what you call new wave...if you think New Wave is B-52s, Cars, Robert Palmer, Devo...all came out of synthesised rock beats where as synthpop like New Order, Dead or Alive, OMD & Pet Shop Boys all came from synthesised disco beats and eventually became techo and both New Wave and synthpop came a decade before alternative...infact new wave begat alternative....or was it grundge, or maybe it was progressive rock...no no ...i'm mistaken it was punk rock begatten from new wave and then punk begat grunge which mellowed to alternative and became progressive except somewhere progressive started sounding more like the old new wave and nobody could get signed so the called it Indie but as soon as those guys get popular and get signed they all mellow out and join back with their alternative mentors and now it is call AAC (Adult Alternative Contemporary) cause all the alternative artists are too old to really rock and since the guy from Hutie and the Blowfish crossed over to country I guess really you could say Rock begat the new country movement....

Sorry now my head is spinning so don't get me started with funk into house into it's 1432 different sub genres....how about we just do rock, urban and dance does that work for everybody?

Yeah I slowed down some of my old Hard House tracks about 15bpm to 130bpm and you couldnt really tell the difference ;)

I guess my music tastes have slowed a little (like me).
